Castlewellan Notes 29th May 2007
Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)
Club Notes for week-ending June 2nd
Games:
A turn around in fortunes for our senior
footballers who won two out of two in the past
week, away to Loughinisland on Monday past
winning by the narrowest of margins and
clutching victory from the jaws of defeat. Our
luck held out on the Friday night when a last
minute town goal secured our two point lead and
it is fair to say that the full time score
belied the run of the game and Attical can feel
justified in feeling a little bit sore at the
end result. However four badly needed points
bagged for the town have helped to edge our way
slowly up the table.
Our senior hurlers didn’t do so well loosing
1.13 to 0.8 away to Bredagh. Our U14 footballers
made up for this disappointment however by
beating the Bredagh lads by two goals on a final
tally of 2.07 to 0.7. This was another excellent
performance from the U14’s who are improving
with every game. At half time they led by 1-6 to
0-2 and added a further 1-1 to 0-5 for Bredagh
in the second half. The scoring, tackling and
defending were excellent and the defending in
particular, towards the end of the game when
Bredagh were pressing for scores, deserves a
special mention.
The Minor footballers didn’t do so well against
Glenn loosing by two point in a game they could
have won. .As in previous games this season the
town minors were slow to start and found
themselves trailing Glenn at half time by 0-2 to
0-10.After some stern words and encouragement
from their coaches they came out for the second
half and put up a very good performance and
scored 1-6 to 0-3 from Glenn.This was a game
which the Castlewellan boys could have won, but
a lack of discipline and the poor first half
performance led to a defeat. Scores: Lorcan
Tumelty (0-1), Aidan O'Neill(0-5, 4 frees),
Thomas Beckett (0-1), Brian Morgan (1-0).

Irish Language.
The Club’s cultural officer Ciara Ni Fhlanagain
this week called on club members to give their
support for an Irish Language Act. She said “ As
Irish speakers, we find ourselves yet again the
victims of inequality. In Wales, Scotland and in
the South of Ireland the rights of their
respective native languages, Welsh, Scots Gaelic
and Irish, are protected. However, here, in the
North of Ireland, we are being denied these
rights. The British Government is prepared to
overlook the thousand of school children who are
being educated in Irish medium education, to
ignore the rich and embracing Irish heritage
that gives origins to 96% of the place-names in
the North and to shun the thousands of Irish
speakers in the North.
As I am sure you are aware, a consultation
process has already taken place and 93% of the
responses were in favour of implementing the
Irish language Act.
However, strangely, the Department of Culture,
Art and Leisure (DCLA) has commissioned a second
consultation process before any decision to
implement this act would be taken. This second
process finishes on the 5th June and until now
75% of the responses have been against
introducing the Irish language act. It would
appear that anti-Irish groups are arranging some
sort of campaign to prevent this act and in so
doing, denying Parity of Esteem.
I ask you to spend a few minutes to send a quick
e-mail to the DCLA at
margaret.okeeffe@dcalni.gov.uk.
giving your support for the proposed language
act.”
A
small number of grants will be made available
from Down GAA to successful candidates who will
be attending Irish language courses/colleges
this summer. The scheme will be open to school
students who live in Co Down, and the decisions
will be taken by the Irish Language and Culture
Committee.
Applications will be available from later next
week, and will be emailed to club delegates and
secretaries. The form will also be available
online at
www.downgaa.net.
The annual Ulster Council hosted Irish language
summer course will take place in Downings GAA
