U16 Hurling Shield Semi-Final: Our U16 hurlers
kept our hopes alive of winning some silver
this year with an outstanding performance in
the shield sem-final last Saturday in St Malachy’s
Park.. After a disappointing defeat in the Championship
against Liatriom our young hurlers took to the
field on Saturday determined to make amends
against Carryduff, and from the whistle blew
they took control in every sector of the field
with some fine scoring and a solid defence that
allowed Carryduff only 2 points to Castlewellan’s
2.07 at the end of the first half. In the second
half the team started where they left off and
the visitors just had no answer to the skill
and determination of the town team who finished
the game on a score line of 4.14 to 1.04. Castlewellan
will now meet Kilclief or Clonduff in the final
and we wish them the best of luck for the game.
Castlewellan scorers Aidian Keown (1.03), Michael
Keown (1.01), Jason Croskery (1.03), Ciaran
Rice (1.03, Arron Rice (0.03), Faichra O Maolcrabihe
(0.01).
Down Over 40’s: Congratulations to Audie
McVeigh, Donal Ward and Paddy Hardy and the
Down over 40's who beat Tyrone 2:12 - 0:09 in
their replayed All -Ireland Semi Final in Healy
Park Omagh on Monday Oct 1st and drew with Mayo
in Breffni Park Cavan in the All -Ireland Final
on Saturday 6th October. Replay this Friday
– Good luck in the replay lads.
Happy retirement to big Mickey: We wish Mickey
Mc Veigh all, the best in his retirement from
inter-county football and thank him for his
many years service to the County team. He made
his debut for Down in 1995 and made 55 league
appearances & up on 30 Championship performances.
He won 2 McKenna cup medal and 3 Railway Cup
Medals. Mickey unfortunately was on the loosing
side in 3 Ulster Finals, 1996 v Tyrone, 1999
v Armagh and 2003 v Tyrone. However he holds
3 Railway cup medals 2000, 2003 & 2004.
Remarkably he is the 3rd Castlewellan man to
play in goals for Ulster, following in the footsteps
of the late John O'Hare in the 1940’s
and Lawerence McAlinden in the 1970’s
Mickey McVeigh has always been a great ambassador
for Castlewellan and his home Club and is the
proud holder of 2 Down SFC medals which he won
as a member of the town championship winning
side of 1994/95. He also remains the only Castlewellan
man to hold 3 All-Ireland Kilmacud 7's trophies
1996 - 2000 - 2006. Thankfully Mickey has vowed
to continue coaching with town teams and hopefully
will mentor another town goalie.
