St Malachy's GAC Castlewellan Club
Club Notes for week-ending November 3rd

U16 Hurling Championship Shield Final: Castlewellan U16 Hurlers did the Club proud on Saturday past when they came out on top with a well earned win over Clonduff in the U16 Hurling Shield final. It was not the greatest of starts for the town lads as Clonduff came out of the traps a lot faster leading to Castlewellan conceding two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. This came as a shock to both players and management and the town lads quickly knew that they had a tough battle on their hands. However thing soon settled down when the town defence took control of the Clonduff attack, and the flow of the game started to change to Castlewellan’s advantage when Faichra O’Maolcraibihe and Aidan Keown got on top at midfield and delivered some great balls into the forward line which were coverted into points by Jason Croskery playing at half forward. Coming up to half time Jason put a long ball in towards the Clonduff goals which put the keeper under pressure, causing him to break the ball and strike it straight out to town forward Arron Rice who quickly smashed the ball into the back of the net which broyght the town to within two points off Clonduff. The half time score was Clonduff 2.03. Castlewellan 1.04

In the second half Castlewellna played with even greater spirit and a determination to win this final. The game was a credit to both teams who played the game with great skill and in a very sporting manner. A second town goal this time from Jason Croskery and further points also from Jason and another from Castlewellan’s Mickey Keown sealed Clonduff fate and ensured Castlewellan would have some silverware for their trophy cabinet this year.

After the game the hurling shield was presented to Castlewellan captain Ciaran McCartan from Hurling Board member Gerard McShane. Player of the match was a close call between full back Ruairi Laverty and Jason Croskery with Ruairi just pipped at the post by Jason who had an outstanding game all round finishing with a personal tally of 1,04. Final score was Castlewellan 2.07 to Clonduff’s 2.05. Castlewellan scorers Jason Croskery 1.04; Aidan Keown 0.01; Arron Rice 1.01; Mickey Keown 0.01.
