2006 Kilmacud Champions
Castlewellan failed to retain their title at
Kilmacuds this year. However the large turnout
of Castlewellan supporters that travelled to
Dublin will not be disapointed with their team's
performance.
The path to the semi-finals was not easy
with some very stiff competition along the
way. Nevertheless this young Castlewellan
side played some brilliant sevens football
to win their Group unbeaten as follows:-
Castlewellan 2.09, Parnell's Dublin 0.5;
Castlewellan 4.08, St Lomas Westmeath 0.7;
Castlewellan 3.10, O'Donovan Rossa 4.03;
and in the quarter-finals -
Castlewellan 1.12 Thomas Davis 0.10.
Castlewellan were beat only in the Semi-final
against a much fitter and more experienced
Longstone team that went on to win the competition
beating Castlewellan Sevens winners St Gall's
in the final.
The Castlewellan team selected to play in
this year's sevens was a combination of some
experienced players together with members
of last year's minor team some of whom never
played in a competition of this stature before.
However the Castlewellan managers were more
than pleased with their choice of players
and on the overall team performance on the
day. Team manager Danny Keown said that the
sevens in Kilmacud will once again prove to
be a great learning curve for some of our
younger team members and will prove to be
a valuable experience for their development
as accomplished team players.
The Castlewellan team were Mickey McVeigh,Finty
McGreevy, Damien McGrady, Ruairi McArdle,
Cailam O'Hare, Daniel Morgan, liam McKibben,
Barry Travers, Bernard McAleenan,Cahal Crilly.
The score in the semi-final was Castlewellan
0.15 to Longstone's 2.14.
