Club Notes for week-ending September 29th
Games: Castlewellan senior footballers pulled
out all the stops on Saturday evening to beat
Longstone by the narrowest of margins and
avoid the dreaded bottom 4 play-offs. Castlewellan
were in the ascendancy for almost all of this
game leading by 4 points at half time. Longstone
took the lead briefly in the second half after
scoring a goal, but the town lads battled
back again with a succession of points to
gain a further 4 point lead. Another Longstone
goal and a further point brought both teams
level in the dying moments of the game before
a final Castllewellan point give the town
lads the margin they required before the referee
sounded the final whistle. A close call for
the town but the final score belied a excellent
town performance which they could have won
by more even with the town reduced to 14 men
when Gregory McCartan was red-carded in the
final quarter of the game.
Our under 16 hurlers weren’t so fortunate
against Laitroim in the U16 hurling championship
on Saturday knocked out by a Laitroim score
line of 1.17 to 0.5. On Sunday our U14 footballers
give a very good account of themselves when
they traveled to Saval for Saval’s 9-a-side
tournament. Castlewellan won their first two
games against Annaclone and Glenn, where beaten
narrowly by Saval in their third game and
in their fourth game were beating Mayobridge
by 1 point close to full time when a bridge
goal resulted in them loosing theitr final
game by two points, with the Bridge going
on to win the competition with Castlewellan
in third place. A good all round performance
for our U14’s in their last outing of
the season and hopefully they will come back
much stronger next year. A special word of
thanks to Sean Rooney and Brian Cunningham
for entering the competition at short notice.

overstretched due to so many Club commitments
and are unable to find the time to organise
and run the monthly social evenings. We are
appealing therefore to parishioners who may
have a bit of time on their hands to become
involved. All Club facilities including transport,
drivers and kitchen will be made available
and help and guidance provided. Please contact
