Castlewellan 2-14 Kilcoo 2-13
ACPRFL 1
A depleted Castlewellan 2nds came away victorious
from Kilcoo on Sunday afternoon after a
hard fought and thoroughly deserved win.
Kilcoo has not been a happy hunting ground
for Town teams in recent years and this
victory was made all the more sweet by the
fact that the winning goal, from the boot
of Sean Russell, came from a 14 yard free
in the 6th minute of injury time.
Playing with the wind Kilcoo raced into
a 1-4 to 0-2 lead after 15 minutes before
both teams were reduced to 14 men with Shay
Flanagan and Paddy Devlin seeing red.
The Town kept plugging away and by half
time the deficit was a solitary point.
Ruairi McArdle completed a fine move before
rounding the Kilcoo keeper and blasting
to the net within minutes of the restart.
Both teams traded points with the boot of
Noel Devlin keeping Kilcoo infront with
some well taken frees.
Sean Russell responded with some fine scores
of his own and ended the day with a tally
of 1-8. Aidan O'Neill also scored a great
left footed free to help the Town establish
a 3 point lead with around 10 minutes remaining.
Kilcoo were reduced to 13 men with 10 minutes
left for a second yellow card offence but
as so often happens the Town failed to make
their numerical advantage count as much
as they would have liked.
A late Kilcoo goal followed by a pointed
free seemed to have sealed their win but
Sean Russell stepped forward to rifle home
a cracking goal with the very last kick
of the game to give the Town the victory
they deserved.
A gutsy, brave performance from all 16 Town
men who played, coupled with some great
pieces of skill and fine scores were the
basis for this victory and hopefully the
Kilcoo voodoo that has haunted Town teams
in recent seasons has finally been laid
to rest.
