Castlewellan GAC Club notes Wednesday 26th March
by Tony McAtamney
• The Club Executive are inviting
all Club Members to Clubrooms Easter Monday
from 8.00pm for a member's night in appreciation
of member's contributions to running the
club in so many areas. From helping out
or supporting fund raising activities such
as the Festival, Golf Classic, 600 Draw
and F Factor, coaching and managing club
teams in football, hurling and camogie,
running over 55's Club, calling bingo, and
all the many maintenance and administrative
tasks that must be carried out on a weekly
basis. All drinks reduced to £1.50,
also buffet, and music by Tommy Fitz.
• Tickets for the Annual 600 Club
Draw are still available and I would remind
all members and especially every playing
member of the importance of selling or at
least buying one ticket as our current development
proposals are to floodlight this year the
new pitch at Dublin Road with the highest
possible specification of lighting that
will facilitate football and hurling matches
as well as winter training for all club
teams. If you haven't purchased a ticket
yet please do so now from any committee
member. Would all sellers please make their
returns before Wednesday 26th March.
• The Club Executive have called
a Special General Meeting under rule 8.7
of the Club Constitution to hear members
views on the burning issue of proposals
to introduce grants/expenses/awards under
a new GAA Player Annual Support Scheme on
Wednesday 26th March at 8.45pm in Clubrooms.
Following Wednesday night’s meeting
our rep attending the County Committee will
be instructed to vote in accordance with
the wishes of the members present at our
Special General Meeting.
• What a start to the senior championship
with the local derby game between the Town
and the Ford. Our Seconds play Bredagh,
the Thirds Drumgath and our hurlers meet
Portaferry. The senior football league starts
in four weeks away against Clonduff.
• Club Lotto 16/3/2008 no’s
2,6,8,9 Jackpot now £5,800. Remember
you can play the lotto online at www.castlewellangac.com.
• With the four McCann brothers Ciaran,
Brendan, Colm and Ryan all turning out for
the senior hurlers does anybody know of
three or more brothers all to turn out for
a senior team at the same time? In the mid
1990’s The McCabe’s Paul, Cormac
and Ciaran all played on the senior football
team. At one stage in the late 1990’s
the five McGeown brothers Marty and Brian
(Seniors) and twins Gavin and Paul (Minor)
and Neill (U16) all were playing for the
Town. The three McArdle brothers Paul, Niall
and Ruairi have all played Senior football
over this past 5 years but due to injury
have been unable to all play together.
• Good luck to St Malachy's High
who take on Leinster Champions Ashbourne
Community School in Drogheda on Saturday
March 22nd in their bid to reach the All-Ireland
U18 Vocational Schools final for only the
second time in their history.
• Good luck also to Downpatrick
De La Salle in their All-Ireland semi-final
encounter with Dunslaughlin on April 2nd.
Congratulations also on winning the Arthurs
Cup for the first time in the School's history.
