na Banna win local derby - 23/06/2003
ACFL
Div 3: Aghaderg 0:8 Clann Na Banna 1:9 20/06/2003
This local derby started off at a blistering pace with firm
challenges a plenty. Nervousness was evident in both sides. Banbridge though were
first to settle after quick thinking from a free kick by Johnny Burns gave Liam
mc crum a chance which he converted for a point. Early pressure from Bann resulted
in a fifty which the on form burns sent sailing over the bar. That proved to be
banbridge last score for some fifteen minutes as the home side gained the ascendancy.
Aghaderg knocked over four unanswered points in good spell for the home team.
Clann Na Banna urged on by manager Rusty Mc Caufield began to reassert themselves
on the game. Good work in the midfield by the hard working Sean Mc Cusker gave
corner forward Patrick Gillen the chance for a point which he made look easy.
A strong run from the willing half back Paul Burns gave Ivor Mc Grath the chance
for a point from a tight angle which he squeezed over. Half Time Aghaderg 0:4
Clann Na Banna 0:4
Agaderg started the second period in
a lively fashion with two quickfire points which were the result of Clann Na Banna
overplaying the ball in the half back line. Claims for a penalty were turned away
by the referee after a goal mouth scramble in the Aghaderg small square. A fifty
was the referee's decision and it was duly converted by Liam Mc Crum. After a
lengthy run up field from half back John Paul Gartland a clever pass gave Liam
mc crum a chance which he took on the run and pointed. With the match all square
a change in tactics from the Banbridge management changed the game.
Powerful
midfielder Daryl Clarke was moved to full forward and his presence gave Patrick
Gillen the chance for a goal which he drove to the net. A foul on youngster Gillen
gave Mc Crum a chance from a free which he slotted over from forty metres. Another
foul this time on Mc Crum himself gave Clann Na Banna another point. Aghaderg
rallied and came back into the game with two long range points to bring the score
line closer again. These proved to be the home sides last scores with Clann Na
Banna's best move of the game culminating in left half back Patrick feeney taking
a brilliant score from wide on the right.
At the death
the referee awarded the home side a somewhat dubious penalty for an alleged foot
block. A well placed penalty was expertly touched onto the post and to safety
by Bann keeper Colm Gribben (his third penalty save in three weeks). Final Score
Aghaderg 0:8 Clann Na Banna 1:9.
