On
Sunday next at St Malachy’s
park Castlewellan at 4pm Portaferry
and Clonduff meet in the senior
camogie championship final. Both
teams have never won this title
before which has been in the hands
of the Liatroim Fontenoys for
the last sixteen years. Clonduff
recently defeated the Fontenoys
to dethrone them of their title.
Portaferry defeated Ballyholland
to get to the final
Both
teams have many young and experienced
players. Clonduff will be expecting
good performances from the Carr,
Maginn and Gribben sisters and
will lead from goals with the
experienced Guivenera Carr while
Portaferry will be relying on
the former County Star Deirdre
Savage to steer the team to a
County title. Portaferry will
also be expecting good performances
from their County minor players.
Portaferry recently won the senior
Ulster shield when they defeated
a strong Ballinderry side. This
experience will have instilled
confidence into their young side.
Both
teams are no strangers to County
finals and will bring a large
contingent of support from the
breath of the County. Clonduff
will start the favourites. They
are strong all over the field
and have a wealth of experience
and skill. Moya Maginn at full
back will be difficult to get
past and Captain Fionnuala Carr
will sweep up in the half back
line. Up front County players
Orla Maginn and Karen Gribben
will be hard to mark and Sarah
Louise Carr will be the target
player for scores.
John
Crossy former Down hurling manager
will be looking for his first
championship title in his first
year in charge of the Clonduff
girls.
