Darragh
Cross Notes for week of 25th April
By
Daniel Murray
Darragh Cross GAC notes:
Senior result- Saul 1-09 Darragh Cross
1-10
A pulsating local derby at St Patricks
Park, Saul on Friday evening was
deservedly won by Darragh Cross.
Darragh had built up a four point lead
by half time, but this was quickly
wiped out in the first five minutes of
the second half by Saul.
However, Darragh showed determination,
fighting spirit and that they can hold
their nerve under pressure to hold out
for a single point victory.
The game began like a typical derby
match, scrappy play and many stoppages
for frees. Darragh's Gary Kennedy and
Saul's Peter McKenna each pointed
twice from frees in the first fifteen
minutes. Padraig Mageen, who lined out
and centre half forward replacing Tom
McMahon who wasn't fit to start, edged
Darragh ahead midway through the half
with a fine left footed score. Minutes
later it was Mageean again with
another point after a darting run
forward.
Darragh then got a goal to go five
points clear, when Gary Kennedy
received the ball on the fourteen
following a slick move and fired under
the keeper and over the line, despite
the best attempts from the Saul
defender to keep it out. Saul
responded well with two Michael Vint
frees, however another well-taken
Mageean point gave the visitors a four
point advantage at the break.
Michael Vint, Sauls most dangerous
attacker on the day, got the first
score of the second half with an early
point. This was Saul's first score
from play. Minutes later Saul were
awarded a very dubious penalty. Marty
McGreevy had fought back bravely to
block a shot on goal by Vint, however
the referee adjudged him to have
touched the ball on the ground,
infuriating the Darragh players and
bench. The penalty was tucked away by
Peter McKenna and Saul had pulled
level. McKenna then scored another
free and Darragh feared the worst.
Tom McMahon was introduced, and within
minutes had put Darragh a point ahead
with two pointed frees. Saul responded
with two more scores from frees to go
a point up again, but a Gareth
McGovern free levelled up the scores
going into the final five minutes. A
point from Jason Dagens gave Saul the
advantage, however Darragh responded
immediately with a long range accurate
shot from Gerard Marks which sailed
over the bar. In the final minute
Darragh were awarded a free on the 21
and the left boot of Gareth McGovern
tucked it over to clinch victory. In a
scrappy match, with only seven scores
coming from play, Darragh did deserve
this victory. Captain Eugene Murray
had a terrific game at centre half
back, and was helped by impressive
performances from Ryan McGreevy and
Paddy Murray alongside him. John
McCarthy and Dermot Timaney battled
throughout to just edge the midfield
sector, and Padraig Mageean and Gary
Kennedy carried the attacking threat.
Darragh Scorers - G Kennedy (1-2), P
Mageean (0-3), T McMahon (0-2), G
McGovern (0-2), G Marks (0-1).
Saul Scorers - P McKenna (1-5), M Vint
(0-3), J Dagens (0-1).
This Friday the Seniors are home to
Warrenpoint, throw in is at 6.45pm.
The Senior hurlers continued their
winning streak with a one point
victory over Portaferry at home last
Tuesday night. Darragh were behind up
until the last few minutes, when a
goal from Des Sweeny gave them a
narrow win. The team have a bye on
Tuesday night before an away match
against Clonduff the following week.
Training takes place on Thursday
nights at 7.15pm.
The reserve match on Sunday night was
postponed due to the pitch in
Newcastle being unplayable. This
Sunday the reserves are home to
Ardglass with a 7pm throw-in.
Congratulations to Marcus Miskelly who
was part of the Down Under-21 panel
which won the Ulster title on
Saturday. Marcus scored the equalising
point in normal time which brought the
match into extra time.
