Intermediate
Championship - Tullylish 1-14 Darragh
Cross 0-8
Tullylish dumped Darragh Cross out of
the Intermediate Championship, in a
comfortable win at St John's. Both the
Division 3 promotion chasing clubs
went into the game on the back of
league defeats in the last series of
games. Tullylish took control of the
game from the 20th minute onwards,
before which it had been a tit-for-tat
affair.
Tullylish got the first score, before
Gareth McGovern and Marcus Miskelly
pointed from play to put Darragh in
the lead. Points from Mark McMahon and
McGovern either side of a Tullylish
score put Darragh two clear. Marcus
Miskelly then knocked over a free, but
this was to be Darragh's last score
for twenty minutes of play. Tullylish
got three unanswered scores to go in
at half time 0-7 to 0-5 ahead.
The
first five minutes of the second half
went by without a score. It was sensed
that the next score would be vital,
and it came from a free for Tullylish.
After this the south-Down men's
confidence grew, as they began to
dominate in most key areas of the
field. Their extra man in defence
thwarted any attacks Darragh could
muster, while their support play was
causing problems in Darragh's defence
with men running through unchallenged.
Midway through the half they had built
up a 0-12 to 0-6 lead, with Padraig
Mageean getting Darragh's point. Marty
Healy and Marcus Miskelly got points
to pull the deficit back to 5 points,
but this was as close as Darragh got.
Tullylish attacked, and their
substitute ran through to score a goal
that killed off the game. Tullylish
deserved their win, showing a greater
hunger and spirit to progress to the
next round. Darragh Cross now must
take stock and improve to achieve
their goal of promotion this season,
starting next week at Tullylish in the
league!
