Darragh Cross Notes 24th July 2006
By
Daniel Murray
Bosco 0-4 Darragh Cross
2-13
Darragh Cross returned to league
action on Sunday after the July break,
and picked up were they left off with
another two points in their march
towards the promotion play-offs.
Darragh went into the game without
several key players, but began well
with four unanswered points in the
first ten minutes. Gareth McGovern
curled over a free, before receiving
an angled pass from Padraig Mageean
and pointing again. Eoin Mageean got
the next score with a point from 21
yards, before McGovern made it 0-4 to
0-0. Bosco got on the scoresheet in
the twelth minute with a close range
point, but Darragh added scores from
Mark McMahon, Eoin Mageean and Gareth
McGovern to go six clear. Two points
for the home side late in the half
kept them in contention.
Darragh were playing against the wind
in the second period, but any thoughts
of a close game were diminshed when
the league leaders got the first five
scores of the second half. Points from
Eoin Mageean and Gareth McGovern put
the away side six clear again. In the
next attack Darragh got the goal which
killed the game, when Pat McMahon was
played through by nephew Mark and
placed to the bottom corner. Mark
McMahon and Gareth McGovern added
points, before Bosco got their only
score of a poor second half
performance. Points from Mark and Tom
McMahon increased Darragh's lead,
before Marty McGreevy played through
talisman McGovern who looped to the
net.
Debutant Marty Burns had a solid game
in goals, while Padraig Mageean
dominated the half back line with some
superb fielding and passing. Up front
Gareth McGovern carried the scoring
threat, and was well supported by Mark
McMahon.
Scorers - G McGovern (1-6), P McMahon
(1-0), M McMahon (0-3), E Mageean
(0-3), T McMahon (0-1)
Darragh Cross 2-15 Dundrum 3-5
Darragh contiuned their winning run in
the reserve league with a comfortable
win against a strong Dundrum side at
St Mochai's Park. The away side got a
perfect start with a goal in their
first attack. Marty McGreevy then ran
through from midfield to get Darragh
on the scoreboard, before Eoin Mageean
put his side ahead with a wonderful
goal. The half-forward caught a
Dundrum kick-out and soloed passed
three men before striking to the roof
of the net.
A
Hugh Murray free increased the lead,
before Dan Murray curled over from 30
yards. Darragh were playing some good
passing football, and Brian Canavan
turned and pointed in the next attack.
Mark McMahon added two well-taken
points either side of a long-range
score from Hugh Murray, as Darragh
went in 1-7 to 1-3 ahead.
Eoin
Mageean pointed a free at the start of
the second half, before Dan Murray put
Darragh six points clear with another
score. Hugh Murray then blocked a
defenders clearance and ran on to beat
the keeper and get the second goal for
the Cross. Malachy Sweeney curled over
from a tight angle as
Darragh looked like
they had the points in the bag.
However, Dundrum replied with two
quick goals in a three minute spell to
narrow the gap to just four points.
Darragh were not to be denied however,
and points from Gareth McGovern, Hugh
Murray and Mark McMahon tilted the
iniative back in their favour. In the
last five minutes Darragh played the
game out, adding two McGovern points
in between points for Dundrum. Mark
Miskelly, Eoin Mageean and Hugh Murray
were best for the winners.
Scorers - H Murray (1-3), E Mageean
(1-1), G McGovern (0-3), M McMahon
(0-3), D Murray (0-2), M Sweeney
(0-1), B Canavan (0-1), M McGreevy
