Darragh Cross Notes 7th July 2006

By Daniel Murray

Thursday July 6th

Darragh Cross 2-11 Drumaness 1-8 Darragh Cross overcame Drumaness on Thursday night in the last match before the July break. Earlier in the season Darragh went to Drumaness and came away with a six point victory, and the league leaders won by the same margin this time, in an eventful local derby. Drumaness took the lead with a Michael Savage free, and it took Darragh eight minutes before they got on the scoreboard. Marcus Miskelly levelled the scores, but before this the home side had kicked five wides. A free from full-forward Miskelly put Darragh in front, before the impressive Padraig Mageean burst through from midfield and fired to the roof of the net, after a good pass from Paddy Murray. The next score came when Paddy Murray curled over after a good run, and when Hugh Murray punched over for another point, Darragh had a commanding lead. Drumaness came back into it when Darren Oldroyd was free on the edge of the square and fired to the net.

However, in the next attack Mageean surged forward again and scored his second goal. Tom McMahon and Marcus Miskelly added points to give Darragh a 2-6 to 1-1 lead at half time.

The second half was a scrappy affair, with Darragh getting sloppy in possession and being held in their own half for long periods. Drumaness got the half's first point before Gareth McGovern pointed after a raking run from Marty McGreevy. Marty Healy then placed it between the posts to extend the lead. Drumaness kept in touch with another pointed free before Hugh Murray hooked over for the home side. After this Darragh were poor, and Drumaness began to play some good football, scoring five points from play without reply. Points from Eoin and Padraig Mageean in the dying minutes assured Darragh of the win, who now go into the holiday break having won 13 from 14 games in the league.

Scorers - P Mageean (2-1), M Miskelly (0-3), H Murray (0-2), M Healy (0-1), E Mageean (0-1), P Murray (0-1), T McMahon (0-1), G McGovern (0-1)

Monday July 3rd

Aghaderg 0-7 Darragh Cross 0-16 Darragh Cross remain top of Division 3 after a comprehensive victory away at Aghaderg on Monday night. It was an even first half, with Darragh going in at the break leading by the narrowest of margins. In the second half the away side pulled away to record another two points in their push for promotion.

Aghaderg took the lead with a point after five minutes. Darragh levelled it with a long range score from Eoin Mageean, before a Marcus Miskelly free rebounded off the bar only for Hugh Murray to fist over. Gareth McGovern extended the lead, before Pat McMahon ran from defence to curl over the next point. Aghaderg came back into it with two points from frees, before Marcus Miskelly scored two points in quick succession. The home side had their keeper to thank for two outstanding saves in the first half to deny Darragh's attackers. Aghaderg kept on battling, and two points late in the half left them trailing by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, in what was a poor half for Darragh who were making basic errors and poor decisions while on the ball.

Darragh got the first score of the second half through Marcus Miskelly, but couldn't shake off a determined Aghaderg side who brought it back to a one point game in their next attack. In the last twenty minutes Darragh restricted their opponents to one point, as they began to dominate. Tom McMahon won everything at midfield, and the tireless running of his partner Padraig Mageean was setting up attacks for the away side. Hugh Murray curled over, before Marty Healy set Gareth McGovern up who calmly stroked over. The next score came when Ryan McGreevy fielded a goal kick and played in Healy who curled between the posts. Eoin Mageean and Marcus Miskelly extended the lead, but Aghaderg did reply with a point. However, Darragh were too far in front and were well on top of their opponents. Peter Swail swivelled on the 21 and hooked over the next point, before McGovern got his third point with a smart punch over. Tom McMahon fired over the last two points to cap off another win for the Cross. There were impressive performances from Sean Timoney, Ryan McGreevy, Tom McMahon and Padraig Mageean. Darragh Scorers - M Miskelly (0-4), G McGovern (0-3), T McMahon (0-2), E Mageean (0-2), H Murray (0-2), P Swail (0-1), P McMahon (0-1), M Healy (0-1).
