Darragh Cross Notes - 12th June 2006

By Daniel Murray

A Sports Day will be held at the club on Sunday afternoon. There will be races for primary schools, as well as under-14 and 16s, as well as 7 a side matches in football hurling and camogie. The days events begin at 12noon with an Under 12 Go Games match between Darragh Cross and Teconnaught. There will also be a bouncy castle, fun stalls, competitions and a Barbecue. All are welcome.

The reserve team strolled to a comfortable win at home to St Pauls on Sunday evening, winning by 2-13 to 1-2. Darragh opened the scoring with a goal in their very first attack when Mark McMahon rattled it to the top corner from close range. Eoin Mageean added a point from long range, and Darragh scored four mmore points before St Pauls got on the score board. Hugh Murray, Marty McGreevy, Eoin Mageean and Dan Murray all pointed to give Darragh control of the match. St Pauls replied with a goal and a point, but Ryan Miskelly ran through from half back to register a point late in the half and leave Darragh 1-6 to 1-1 up at the break.

The second half was more of the same as Darragh attacked at will. Five minutes into the half Michael McMahon sidefooted low to the net, and points from Hugh Murray (2), Marty McGreevy (2), Michael Murray and Gareth McGovern (2) finished off St Pauls, who didn't threaten the Darragh defence in the second half. Neil McGreevy and Ryan Miskelly were excellent in defence for the home side. Going forward, Hugh Murray, Marty McGreevy and Eoin Mageean were impressive also.

Scorers - Hugh Murray (0-3), Marty McGreevy (0-3), Michael McMahon (1-0), Mark McMahon (1-0), Gareth McGovern (0-2), Eoin Mageean (0-2), Michael Murray (0-1), Dan Murray (0-1), Ryan Miskelly (0-1)

Darragh Cross Under-14s fell to a 7 point defeat on Thursday night but can take much heart from a brave performance against an older and more physical Liatroim side. After 5 minutes Darragh were 1-1 to 0-1 ahead after Shane Murray had cleverly punched the ball to the net and Michael McGreevy had hooked over. However, after this bright opening from Darragh, when they should have been further ahead, Liatroim gained control for the remainder of the half. They scored a goal and seven points in this period, most of which came from the right foot of their classy full forward. Darragh only registered through an Anton McGratton free. Half-Time Darragh 1-2 Liatroim 1-8

Darragh came out for the second half with renewed determination and tried to claw back the Liatroim lead. Michael McGreevy started the revival with a point and this was followed by a Conan Russell point. Then Shane Murray collected the ball 25 yards out with only one thing on his mind and he rounded two defenders before finding the bottom corner of the net. Hugo Corrigan pointed a 40 yard free and Darragh were level. Unfortunately Liatroim got the next two points and then a soft goal which made it an uphill battle for Darragh. Liatroim swamped Darragh for the next ten minutes scoring 5 points but Darragh didn't lie down and scored points through Anton McGratton and Conan Russell. A fortunate Michael McGreevy goal gave Darragh a glimmer of hope with 5 minutes to go but Liatroim finished Darragh off with two late points. Best for the 'Cross on the night were Joe McKinney, Matt Hardy and Shane Murray.

Scorers: S Murray (2-0), M McGreevy (1-2), H Corrigan (0-1), A McGrattan (0-2), C Russell (0-2)

Dundrum 1-7 Darragh Cross 0-16

Darragh Cross won their tenth game in a row to keep their 100% record intact after a tricky match at Dundrum on Friday evening. The last fifteen minutes was when Darragh pulled away from their hosts, showing superior fitness and accurate score taking. Liam Sloan got Darragh up and running with a point after two minutes, but Dundrum levelled it up with their next attack. Three Gareth McGovern points from frees and a Marcus Miskelly score left Darragh four points ahead midway through the first half. Dundrum got the next score, but Marcus Miskelly restored Darragh's lead. A quick break upfield from the home side left the Darragh defence exposed, Michael McMahon saved the first effort but couldn't keep out the rebound as Dundrum lifted their hopes with a goal. This was soon followed by a point and the match was all square again. Padraig Mageean got a point at the end of the half to give Darragh the edge at the break.

It was Mageean who was the difference at the start of the second half, as he ran through from midfield to point again for the league leaders. Liam Sloan and Tom McMahon added scores, but Dundrum hit back with points either side of a Marcus Miskelly pointed free. Darragh then dominated the last quarter of the game, with Gary Kennedy finding his scoring touch with three points, Dermot Timoney firing over and Marcus Miskelly pointing a free to leave the result in no doubt. Dundrum added to late points but Darragh ran out winners by a six point margin. Fintan Murray, Eugene Murray and Padraig Mageean were the top performers for Darragh.

Darragh Scorers - M Miskelly (0-4), G Kennedy (0-3), G McGovern (0-3), L Sloan (0-2), P Mageean (0-2), T McMahon (0-1), D Timoney (0-1)
