Darragh Cross lose first league game: Ardglass 0-16 Darragh Cross 0-14

By Daniel Murray

Ardglass 0-16 Darragh Cross 0-14

Darragh Cross lost for the first time in the league this season, as Ardglass won a tough encounter on Friday evening at Ardtole. Ardglass had built up a six point gap by the break, and although Darragh fought hard to get back into it, the home side held on to record a two point victory.

This has always been a tough place for Darragh Cross to go to in senior football, and this looked like continuing when Ardglass went in at half time leading by 0-11 to 0-05. Marcus Miskelly (2), Gary Kennedy and Gareth McGovern (2) scored the Darragh points. In the second half Ardglass kept up the tempo, with their half backs and midfielders attacking the Darragh defence to good effect. Although Darragh managed to reduce the deficit to two points with scores from Kennedy, Miskelly (3), McGovern (2) and Hugh Murray, Ardglass were not to be denied and on the night deserved the win.

Darragh Scorers – M Miskelly (0-6), G Kennedy (0-3), G McGovern (0-4), H Murray (0-1)

The sports day was cancelled on Sunday due to the poor weather conditions, and will now take place this Sunday at 4.30pm. There will be primary school and underage races as well as mini tournaments in gaelic, hurling and camogie. There will also be a bouncy castle and fun stalls, and a barbecue in the evening. Everyone is welcome!

The reserve footballers had another impressive win, by 5-10 to 1-4 over St Johns on Sunday evening to make it three unbeaten games at home this season. For the third game running Darragh got off to a perfect start, when Mark McMahon was played in and fired to the top corner of the net within the first few minutes. Dan Murray then pointed after finding space on the right, before playing in Mark McMahon minutes later who chipped it over the onrushing keeper into the net for his second goal. Points were added from Gareth McGovern, Peter Casey and Michael McMahon to give Darragh a comfortable lead midway through the half. Michael McMahon then punched to the net in the next attack and Darragh were now cruising. Brian Canavan turned well and looped over the next point, before St Johns finally got their first score. Darragh went in leading by 3-5 to 0-1 at the break.

In the second half Darragh kept the pressure on, with Gareth McGovern pointing a free and Peter Casey firing over from long range. Michael Murray came on as sub and within minutes had scored Darragh’s fourth goal when he punched in from close range after a good ball in from Paddy Murray. St Johns scored a goal on the counter attack, but further points for the home side from Brian Canavan, Mark McMahon and Dan Murray left the result in no doubt. The win was capped off when Hugh Murray burst through to shoot low to the bottom corner. Best for Darragh were Mark Carson, Peter Casey, Brian Canavan and Mark McMahon.

Darragh Cross Scorers – Mark McMahon (2-1), Michael McMahon (1-1), Hugh Murray (1-0), Michael Murray (1-0), Brian Canavan (0-2), Dan Murray (0-2), Gareth McGovern (0-2), Peter Casey (0-2)

The Under 12 team remain unbeaten in Go Games matches this year after two victories this week. On Wednesday night Ardglass were defeated by 12-12 to 3-6, with Fintan Murray, Shane Murray and Declan Murray all starring. On Sunday Teconnaught came to Darragh but were also well beaten. The goals were scored by Joseph McClements (2), Declan Murray (2), Shane Murray (4), Conan Russell, Jarlath Flynn (2) and Conor Keenan (3) as well as some well taken points by Sean O Callaghan and  Conan Russell. Darragh had great performances all over the pitch, but James Murray was a star in the defence and Jarlath Flynn linked the play well in the forwards. Joseph McClements, Shane Murray and Conor Keenan also shone in a fine Darragh victory.

The Under 14 team were defeated in the championship by St Johns last week, by 6-13 to 4-8.
