Darragh Cross Notes 26th June 2006

Darragh Cross 0-12 Bright 1-7
Darragh Cross got back on track with a
narrow win against Bright at St
Mochai's Park on Friday night, but
their visitors pushed them all the way
and deserve a lot of credit for a
battling performance. Gary Kennedy
opened the scoring, and this was
followed up with an Eoin Mageean point
before Bright regsitered their first
score. Further points from Marty
Healy, Padraig Mageean and Hugh Murray
put Darragh 0-5 to 0-2 up midway
through the half. Bright then got the
game's only goal when a high ball in
was punched to the net from close
range. Marty Healy edged Darragh back
in front with an accurate shot between
the posts, before points from
defenders Ryan McGreevy and Pat
McMahon left Darragh three points
ahead at the half time break.
Bright came out for the second half
rejuvanated, and looked as if they may
cause an upset against the league
leaders. Darragh were continually
failing to find their inside forward
line, as the visitors narrowed the gap
to one point with a quarter of the
game remaining. Bright then levelled
up the scoring, but in the closing
stages the home side got two priceless
scores from full-forward Marcus
Miskelly to take the points, in a
generally lacklustre performance.
Darragh scorers - M MIskelly (0-3), G
Kennedy (0-2), M Healy (0-2), P
McMahon (0-1), E Mageean (0-1), P
Mageean (0-1), H Murray (0-1), R
McGreevy (0-1)

Darragh Cross GAC notes:
Darragh Cross Under 16s lost narrowly
to the Dundrum/Ballykinlar combined
team for the second time this season,
3-9 to 3-7. Earlier in the year
Darragh under 16s lost out to a last
minute goal, and it was more
disappointment this time with another
defeat. Dundrum/Ballykinlar got the
first three points of the game as
Darragh took a while to get going,
before Sean McGouran pulled a point
back. After this Darragh had a lot of
the possession, and kicked several
wides when in good positions to close
the deficit. The home side got the
next two points, but Darragh went in
at the break only 0-5 to 0-4 down
after points from McGouran, Steven
Ward and Ben Turner.
An early point in the second half from
Steven Ward made it all square,
however in the next attack Dundrum/Ballykinlar
got a goal, and added a point soon
after. Ward pulled Darragh back into
it with a fine point from wide on the
right, before Michael McGreevy picked
the ball up on the run, jinked past
his man and fired to the far corner of
the net for a wonderful goal that
levelled up the scores. It was now a
tense encounter, and in Dundrum's next
attack they breached the Darragh
defence again to get another goal.
This spurred Darragh Cross into life,
and they went ahead for the first time
after two quick goals. Steven Rice
found himself free at the back post
and blasted home, before Conleth
Morgan also netted to leave Darragh
leading by three points with ten
minutes remaining. After this Darragh
failed to seize the initiative, and
allowed the home side back into it. A
fourteen yard free was blocked on the
Darragh line but the rebound ended up
in the corner of the net. A free for
Dundrum/Ballykinlar put them a point
up, before Conleth Morgan levelled it
at the other end. However this was to
be Darragh's last score, as the hosts
knocked over two more points to seal
the win in an exciting game. Best for
Darragh were Steven Rice, Sean
McGouran and Neil Monaghan.
Darragh Scorers - C Morgan (1-1), S
Ward (0-3), M McGreevy (1-0), S Rice
(1-0), S McGouran (0-2), B Turner
(0-1)
The Under 14 footballers produced a
superb team performance to overcome
neighbours Loughinisland in an
exciting match. Shane Murray and
Michael McGreevy were the main
tormentors of the Loughinisland
backline, scoring 3-2 and 1-7
respectively. Elsewhere, there were
similar excellent performances from
Hugo Corrigan, Steven Murray and Donal
Mageean. Final score Darragh Cross
4-13 Loughinisland 4-10. The scorers
were: S Murray (3-2), M McGreevy
(1-7), H Corrigan (0-2), A McGrattan
(0-2)
Senior camogie match report:
Kilcoo 1-3 Darragh Cross 7-3
A
strong Kilcoo side looked confident of
victory at the start, when they faced
visitors Darragh Cross. Darragh played
with a strong wind in the first half,
and took first blood with a goal from
Fiona Keenan, followed by a point from
Finnait Mageean. Another goal from
Keenan increased Darragh's lead, and
they kept the pressure on to build up
a 4-3 to 0-0 advantage at the break.
Every counter attack from Kilcoo
failed to produce a score, with strong
defending from Jan Miskelly,
Marie-Louise Miskelly and Catherine
Canavan.
Kilcoo had the benefit of the wind in
the second half, which put Darragh
under a lot of pressure in the first
15mins. Noreen Mageean, Meabh Mageean
and Finnait Mageean worked tirelessly
in midfield, ensuring Killcoo did not
get an easy score. Cathy Mc Mahon
defended the half back line with total
commitment. Another excellent goal
from Fiona Keenan and excellent goal
keeping by Una Mc Clements, seemed to
break the Kilcoo confidence. Jade
Heath, new to the senior team, was
excellent in the forward line along
with Claire Miskelly. A point from
Christine Miskelly and further scores
from Fiona Keenan saw the match finish
Darragh Cross 7-3 Killcoo 1-3. An all
round outstanding performance by the
whole Darragh Cross team.
