Darragh Cross Notes - 16th May 2006

By Daniel Murray

Darragh Cross GAC notes

The senior camogie team won on Wednesday night in the league, beating Bryansford by 10-5 to 0-2. Top scorer was Fiona Keenan who scored seven goals and three points at full forward. The other scorers were Finait Mageean, Christine Miskelly and Cathy McMahon. In defence Jan Miskelly and Cathy McMahon performed well, while Finait Mageean was outstanding in midfield, in what was an all-round great team performance. Darragh were leading by 1-1 to no score after five minutes and kept the pressure on, to build up a 7-2 to 0-1 lead at half time. Darragh started the second half with the same determination, quickly scoring two goals to kill off any hopes of a Bryansford comeback. The Darragh Cross Camogie team is under the new management of Paul O Callaghan, who seems to have his sites set on a league and championship double in 2006, with a very impressive side.

The under 12s played their first games of the year on Sunday when Dundrum visited. Darragh fielded two teams and both games were very close, with Darragh just edgeing them. Stars for Darragh were Kevin McClements, Sean O’Callaghan, Conan Russell, Lawrence Whiffen, Jack Barr and Declan Murray. The next fixture is an away game at St Pauls this Sunday. Players should meet at Darragh pitch at 10.30.

Due to matches being on Sundays, training will now take place every Tuesday evening starting at 6.30.

The reserve footballers defeated Saul comfortably on Sunday night by 4-11 to

0-4, to register their first win in the league. Darragh were always in control, and got off to a good start by building up a 0-5 to 0-0 lead midway throught the first half, with Gareth McGovern pointing four frees, and Michael McMahon also getting on the scoresheet. Darragh continued to dominate, with Saul unable to win any ball in the forward line and Darragh's full back line of Vincent Murray, Sean Timoney and Neil McGreevy outstanding. Darragh got their first goal as the half time whistle approached, when Michael McMahon played a through ball to son Mark, who slotted low to the corner. HT Saul 0-0 Darragh C 1-6.

It was more of the same in the second half for the away side. Mark McMahon got a second goal after a good move from defence out left him with a simple finish. Points were added from Malachy Sweeny and Gareth McGovern, before Hugh Murray rounded two defenders to place to the net for Darragh's third goal. Darragh were now attacking at will, and added points from Mark Carson, Brian Canavan, Marty McGreevy and a late goal from Gareth McGovern to cap a fine win.

Darragh Scorers - G McGovern (1-6), Mark McMahon (2-0), H Murray (1-0), Michael McMahon (0-1), M Sweeny (0-1), M Carson (0-1), B Canavan (0-1), M McGreevy (0-1)

Darragh Cross 3-17 Newry Mitchels 0-9

Darragh Cross put in a memorable performance on Friday night against a

Mitchels team that had been flying high in Division 3. Mitchels started the

game the better though and they were a point up within seconds. Gary Kennedy

brought the teams level and then he opened up a three point margin for the

‘Cross by clinically converting a penalty which was awarded after a rash

tackle by the goalkeeper on Marcus Miskelly. Mitchels replied with a well

taken point but then Darragh rattled off three quick scores, two from the

boot of Miskelly and one from Liam Sloan after great vision by Padraig

Mageean. Mitchels notched another score, this time from a free, however by

this stage Darragh were playing some wonderful free flowing football. Gary

Kennedy pointed from a dead ball and then Marcus Miskelly stepped up to

score a sublime three pointer. He collected the ball and danced inside two

men before riffling home to the top corner. Kennedy ended the half with a

fisted point after some intricate play by the Darragh forward unit. H/T 2-6

v 0-4

A focused Darragh came out for the second half determined to kill the game

off early in the half, but Mitchels once again got the first score coming

from a 14 yard free. Gary Kennedy pointed for Darragh but Mitchels replied

with a fine long range effort. A succession of Darragh scores at this stage

effectively ended the game and Mitchels heads did drop. Liam Sloan (2), Mark

McMahon and Gary Kennedy finished off moves in which Darragh moved the ball

with incredible speed and had Mitchels chasing shadows. Mitchels did point

twice but they were only consolation as Tom McMahon slid the ball home for

Darragh’s third goal. Points flooded in from now on with Padraig Mageean

(2), Gary Kennedy (2), Eoin Mageean and Marcus Miskelly adding scores to

complete a 17 point victory for Darragh. Darragh were brilliant all over the

park however Pat McMahon was outstanding out in defence, Tom McMahon covered

every blade of grass and Miskelly and Kennedy tormented Mitchels all night,

ably assisted by Padraig Mageean and Liam Sloan.

Darragh Scorers: G Kennedy (1-7), M Miskelly (1-3), L Sloan (0-3), T McMahon

(1-0), P Mageean (0-2), M McMahon (0-1), E Mageean (0-1)
