Darragh Cross GAC
notes:
The reserve
footballers defeated Drumaness on
Sunday evening by 2-10 to 1-9 in their
first home match of the season.
Darragh should have won this match
more comfortably, but missed several
good goalscoring chances, and a late
goal for Drumaness made it a slightly
nervy finish. The home side got off to
a good start with a Mark McMahon
point, and minutes later he set up his
father Michael who punched to the net.
Further points from Michael Murray,
Michael McMahon, Mark McMahon (2) and
Hugh Murray (2) left Darragh leading
by 1-7 to 0-6 at the break.
Drumaness got the
opening score of the second half, but
Marty McGreevy replied with a point
for Darragh. A goal soon followed for
Darragh, when a high ball in from Eoin
Mageean looped over the keeper and
into the net. Points were added from
Michael Murray and Eoin Mageean,
before a late goal for Drumaness, but
Darragh held on for victory. There
were impressive displays from Vincent
Murray, Neil McGreevy, Martin Burns,
Hugh Murray and Michael Murray.
Darragh Cross
scorers: Michael McMahon (1-1), Mark
McMahon (0-3), Eoin Mageean (1-1),
Michael Murray (0-2), Hugh Murray
(0-2), Marty McGreevy (0-1)
The Under 12s had
another win in the Go Games at home to
Bright, winning by 8-9 to 7-1. James
Murray, Jonathan Hardy, Shane Murray
and Conor Keenan were best for Darragh,
with the scores coming from Shane
Murray (4-5), Conor Keenan (2-1),
Ciaran O’Callaghan (1-0), Laurence
Whiffen (1-0) and Joseph McClements
(0-1). There is no match scheduled
until the 11th of June,
when the Under 12s will travel to
Ardglass.
The club lotto
jackpot still stands at ₤4,000, and
from now until the prize is won there
will be three payouts of ₤30 each week
for those who match 3 numbers, or
alternatively if their names are drawn
out.
The club are
holding a sports day on Sunday 18th
June. Five local schools have been
invited to participate, with races for
each primary class, as well as events
for under-14 and under-16 boys and
girls. There will also be seven-a-side
matches in the three GAA codes later
in the day for all age groups.
The senior camogie
team had an impressive win in the
league against Warrenpoint by 2-7 to
0-5. Playing
conditions on the pitch were not ideal
and
Darragh Cross got of to a slow start
against a very physical
Warrenpoint team. At half time Darragh
lead by a narrow margin of only 2
points. But Darragh came out in the
second half with new determination
and raised their game to dominate the
second half. An early goal by
Fiona Keenan set Darragh on their way
with points following from Rosie
Murray, Finait Mageean and further
scores from Fiona Keenan. Excellent
goal keeping by a young Claire Mc Stay
kept Warrenpoint at bay with
similar encouraging performances from
Nora Mageean, Celine Renyolds and
Claire
Miskelly.
Darragh Cross 2-14
Tullylish 1-3
Darragh maintained
their winning ways in division 3 on
Friday evening with a comprehensive
victory over Tullylish. Twenty minutes
into the game it appeared as if a
close game was developing, however
Tullylish failed to register a single
score the entire second half and
Darragh ran out comfortable winners.
Darragh began well
and grabbed the first score of the
game through Tom McMahon. Tullylish
fought back with two points in quick
succession though before Gary Kennedy
opened his account to level the game.
With Tullylish’s next attack they
capitalized on indecision in the
Darragh defense and the ball was fired
past the helpless Michael McMahon in
the Darragh goal. Eoin Mageean and
Marcus Miskelly replied for Darragh to
leave a single point between the sides
midway through the half. Then Marty
Healy found space and rocketed the
ball into the top corner of the
Tullylish net to give Darragh a lead
which they never lost. Tullylish
converted a close range free which was
to be their last score of the night.
Gary Kennedy (2) and a Marcus Miskelly
free left Darragh leading by 4 points
at the interval.
A more focused
Darragh team came out for the second
half and quickly killed the game off.
Marcus Miskelly was Darragh’s key man
in this half and Tullylish failed to
contain him. He scored six second half
points, three coming from open play.
Gary Kennedy contributed with a point
and a late Mark McMahon goal put the
gloss on a Darragh victory. Tullylish
didn’t threaten the Darragh goal at
all in the second half. Best for the
winners were Paddy Murray, Padraig and
Eoin Mageean and Marcus Miskelly.
Darragh Scorers: M
Miskelly 0-8, G Kennedy 0-4, M Healy
1-0, M McMahon 1-0, E Mageean 0-1, T
McMahon 0-1.
