Heavy defeat for Downpatrick
in Ulster opener
24 October 2007
Down intermediate football champions,
Downpatrick suffered a heavy
defeat in the opening round
of the Ulster intermediate football
champions on Sunday, 21st of
October in St. Tiarnach’s
Park, Clones losing to an in-form
Tyholland side on a scoreline
of 3-17 to 1-7.
The Monaghan
champions started the game at
a very fast pace and after ten
minutes they were ahead by 2-4
to 0-0. The Down side came to
grips with the situation for
the remainder of the half, and
at the break they trailed by
2-9 to 0-3. Tyholland didn’t
allow the Downpatrick side come
back into the game, and the
Down champions hopes weren’t
helped when they conceded a
penalty in the opening minutes
which was stroked home by Monaghan
senior county star, Raymond
Ronaghan which left his side
ahead by 15 points. After this
there was no way back for Downpatricks.
Despite this they battled to
the very end - but at the final
whistle they were a well-beaten
and demoralised side.
One of the
few bright spots for Downpatrick
came in the 22nd minute when
Gregory Deegan scored a great
solo goal to give a slightly
better degree of respectability
to the final tally but in the
end they were a well beaten
side.
