Football Championship 1st Round.
Liatroim 0-08 Laochra na Farriage 1-07
By Marc MacSiomoin, Dundrum
Michael Robb's punch to the net on
32 minutes was the killer blow that sent Liatroim crashing out of the Championship.
The goal on the stroke of halftime kept Laochra in the lead for the remainder
of the game and has set up an intriguing duel with Rostrevor next week.
The first half was slow to get started and it took 19 minutes until the first
score arrived. It came courtesy of an intricately weaved move which saw Hugh Robb
lay off to Hogg. Hogg then fed the ball to Murray who in turn accurately guided
it over the bar. Liatroim were quick to react as 3 minutes later corner forward
McCabe punted the ball between the sticks. Seamus O'Rourke then got in on the
act as he finished off a well taken solo effort with halftime looming.
Laochra
upped the ante for the final exchanges and their increased possession led to a
McShane score after Hogg had wrestled free of Morgan. The goal duly arrived in
injury time for the away lads as the two Robb brothers combined to gain the lead
for Laochra. This was followed up with a subliminal score from Hugh Robb after
he took receipt of Chris Robb's high catch. Liatroim went in trailing by 4 points.
A fantastic 10 minute period from the throw in saw Liatroim reduce the deficit
to 1 point. Roaming full forward Michael Murphy helped himself to a double before
midfielder McCartan got his first score of the game. Na Farriage then clawed themselves
back into the lead when Hogg converted a free from close range. Yet Liatroim wouldn't
give in. They kept driving forward and they were rewarded with scores from Murphy
and Doyle. This left the game at a stalemate and with everything to play for.
However it was the Dundrum/Ballykinlar combination who
kept their heads and sealed their win in the final 10. McShane kickstarted the
fightback with a free. Then the Fontenoys levelled the game with a Morgan score.
The last exchanges were frantic and despite Liatroim laying seige to the Laochra
box, it was the coastal side who had the final say. The superstar of the night
Chris Robb floated over a free just before he fired the best point of the night
on the hour mark. His scores left Laochra two clear and on the road to Rostrevor
for the last 16 encounter.
