Dundrum Notes for
5th April 2004
By

* The members of the Senior panel would
like to thank Chris Brown for all the
work and effort he has put into the
team during the past year. Chris decided
to step down from his position as manager
last Tuesday.
* Drumaness provide the first opposition
for the Seniors when the ACFL Division
3 kicks off on Sunday. The match is
set for 5pm in Drumaness and all players
should meet at the clubrooms for 3.45pm.
Clann na Banna are the Intermediate
Championship opponents for the first
round.
* The Seniors played their third and
final pre-season challenge game on Friday
night against Saul. The Division 2 newcomers
emerged winners by five points in a
very close fought game. Colm King had
an excellent game in goals whilst Johnny
McMullan, John Hurley and Philly Shields
stood out in defence. Aaron Doyle and
Kieran Walsh contested a fierce battle
in midfield whilst in the attack it
was Mickey Murray, Marty Coughlan and
Cathal Kielty who were most prominent.
Final score: Dundrum 1-07 Saul 1-12.
* The Minors collected their most impressive
win of the season by hammering Drumaness
in a soggy Loughinisland on Sunday afternoon.
The amalgamation were always the better
side with Paul McComiskey (1-04) and
Conor McShane (0-06) the main architects
of this fine win. Colm King had another
splendid hour between the sticks whilst
John McKibben and Michael Rooney controlled
the defence admirably. Chris Hogg and
Marty Melville dominated midfield with
Paul Rooney and Michael Robb the main
tormentors in attack.
Final Scoreline: Dundrum/Ballykinlar
2-14 Drumaness 0-05.
* The Minors are at home to Loughinisland
tonight (Wednesday) in their penultimate
League encounter. The match is scheduled
for a 6.45pm start with the home players
requested to meet no later than 6pm.
The draw for the Bord na Nog Minor Football
Championship was made last week and
Carryduff will provide the opposition
for the amalgamation in the first round.
*
The U-12's played their first game of
the season against a very talented Dromara
side on Sunday evening at Dundrum. The
team had star performances from Jack
Magee in nets, Conn Rooney and Aidan
Fegan at the back and Declan Cunningham
in midfield. In the forwards it was
Ronan Savage, Stephen Orme and Oisin
McKibbin who caught the eye. Final Scoreline:
Dundrum 2-06 Dromara 5-12. Training
is on Saturday morning with an 11am
start.
* Commiserations to Paul Rooney who
was on the losing St Patrick's, Downpatrick,
Treanor Cup squad last Wednesday. The
Down school were beaten by four points
by a very well drilled St Michaels,
Lurgan. Paul lined out at centre half-forward.
* Speaking of the 'Red High', the Downpatrick
school have recently erected their sporting
hall of fame corridor. A few familiar
Dundrum faces popped up on more than
one occasion. Back in 1970 current Treasurer
and club stalwart Kieran McKibben captained
the McLarnon Cup winning side. Also
on this team was former Chairman Liam
McKibbin. Then in 1977 Thomas McShane
jnr. collected a McLarnon medal along
with an All Ireland 'B' championship.
Seven years later Danny Murray won a
Rannafast and due to a technicality
in the Ulster Colleges that year, went
on to represent the school in the Hogan
Cup semi finals. Unfortunately Colaiste
Chriost Ri from Cork proved too much
to handle and the Downpatrick side crashed
out.
1990 saw Kevin Murray repeat the feat
achieved by Thomas McShane jnr. when
the 'Red High' done the double again
in what is regarded as one of the school's
finest sporting exploits. A wait of
eleven years elapsed before John Gibney
became the sixth Dundrum player to taste
Colleges glory when he attained a McLarnon
Cup medal in 2001.
Although not related with football,
Liam McKibbin also won a Ulster U-19
Schools Basketball championship in 1971.
Could
it be that Liam was the first Dundrum
man ever to hold two Ulster Colleges
medals in two different sports in the
same year?
