ACFL Division 3: Dundrum 3-14 Mitchels
1-08
A very productive first half performance
from Dundrum put paid to a brave second
half comeback from Mitchels in an embarrassingly
one sided Division 3 clash.
Straight from the throw-in Dundrum took
the game by the scruff of the neck and
by halftime possessed an eleven point
lead. Their short passing game proved
too hard for Mitchels to break down
and in the end the superior fitness
levels of the homeside carried them
through.
The intensity of Dundrum's first half
effort saw them amass 2-10. The two
goals being the highlight of the thirty
minutes. The first arrived through Paul
McComiskey after Aaron Doyle offloaded
a Martin Coughlan pass to the young
scoring machine who rattled the ball
to the top corner. The second goal saw
Paddy Doran and Johnny McMullan combine
to send the bustling Cahal Kielty through.
Mitchels were lethargic at the start,
failing to find any consistency in their
play. Dundrum started brightly with
points from Walsh and an overhead effort
from Doran before the Newry men pegged
one back.
The Duns then assumed control with Paul
McComiskey (1-02) and Johnny McMullan
(0-01).
Mitchels then momentarilly scraped back
into it but Dundrum weren't in a forgiving
mood, Walsh and Kielty tagging on points.
Stephen Kearney got one back but Dundrum
were equal to everything and another
two scores from Walsh and McComiskey
sent the Duns further ahead.
The first half petered out with Kielty
getting a goal and the dangerous McComiskey
hitting his fourth point from play.
Mitchels weighed in with a late double
to reduce the gap to eleven points.
The second half saw Dundrum take the
foot of the pedal. Eight wides characterised
their play in this period. Despite this
the Duns outscored their opponents by
a point. Kieran Walsh was in fine form
at this stage, winning a lot of ball
in the middle and knocking over three
points. Veteran Paddy Doran got the
homeside's final point of the night.
Mitchels played a lot better in the
second half but they relied on opportunistic
scores to pump up their tally, a consolation
goal with the last kick being their
swansong. Just moments before super
sub Cormac Venney slid into the box
and connected with a grounded McShane
pass to get Dundrum's third and final
goal of the night.
This was the first time this season
that Dundrum have won two on the trot.
King was reliable in goals, Carey, McKibben
and Murray were tight at the back and
Walsh was dominant at midfield. In the
forwards McShane, Doran and Coughlan
were at the heart of the homeside's
best attacks.
Mitchels need a point to achieve safety
whilst the Duns are quietly preparing
themselves for a playoff game with the
city men.
