Dundrum 0-19
Bredagh 1-14
An amazing scoring
spree from Dundrum either side of the
half time whistle ensured the two
points in an absolute cracker of a
Division 4 game on Friday night.
Three points at the
end of the first half from Kieran
Walsh, Paddy Doran and Johnny McMullan
got the Duns back within a goal of
Bredagh at the break. A further seven
strikes in the first 15 minutes of the
second period from Cathal Kielty
(0-02), Kieran Walsh (0-02), Paul
McComiskey (0-01), Marty Coughlan
(0-01) and Neil McLaughlin (0-01) gave
the homeside a four point lead which
they never relinquished despite
Bredagh giving everything they had for
the last quarter of the match.
It was all Bredagh
at the start of the affair as they
grabbed the first three scores of the
game. Corner forward Johnny Cleary's
two well taken frees being the pick of
the treble. Dundrum replied with a
treble of their own to level the game
after 14 minutes. A fisted effort from
Conor McShane and a double from Paul
McComiskey momentarilly brought
equilibrium to the occasion.
On 17 minutes
Johhny Cleary with another converted
free put Bredagh's noses ahead only
for Dundrum's Kieran Walsh to equalise
in the next attack. This score seemed
to provoke an excellent 10 minutes of
free flowing football from the South
Belfast side. Set peice specialist
Johnny Cleary whacked over another two
frees and full forward Robinson added
to this with a delightful solo effort
which give his side a three point
cushion.
Paddy Doran snuck
in for Dundrum shortly after but
Bredagh replied instantly to
re-establish their three point lead.
After this followed a breathtaking
goal effort from Bredagh's star
attacker Johnny Cleary. The deadly
hitman latched on to a mistake from
his marker Neil McComiskey to
spectacularly find the net from 25
yards out. This goal put Bredagh into
the ascendancy but their healthy
lead soon disappeared after a Dundrum
comeback which saw them hit ten
unanswered points.
After that amazing
sequence of scores and with the game
entering the last 15 minutes of action
Bredagh managed to get their first
score of the second half. Yet again it
was the boot of Johhny Cleary that
raised the white flag. The exchanges
after this saw the teams swap scores
on two occasions. Paul McComiskey
replied to Cleary's effort only for
the Bredagh ace to retaliate once
more. However, Paul McComiskey was
equal to Cleary's exploits as he
sliced over his fifth of the night to
give the Duns a four point lead.
With the game
seemingly running away from them,
Bredagh threw Paddy Heaney into the
full forward position. This tactical
switch reaped immediate dividends as
the big target man bagged his first of
the night. Cleary banged over another
free and all of sudden with 5 minutes
left, only two points seperated the
battling entities.
With tiredness
setting in, the Bredagh defence found
it more difficult to keep tag on the
pacey Dundrum forward line. This led
to lazy tackling which Paul McComiskey
took advanatage of when he pointed a
difficult free. Again it was the same
story in the Dundrum defence as they
resorted to fouling. Cleary then
proceeded to convert his eigth and
final free of the night to put two
points back between the sides.
Inbetween these scores the Bredagh
goalkeeper pulled off two memorable
saves to keep his side in contention.
With the game
approaching stoppage time the tension
of the affair got to some individuals.
Bredagh's Paddy Heaney saw red at a
critical stage. His dismissal came
seconds after Bredagh got within a
solitary point of their soon to be
conquerors. This sending off seemed to
deflate Bredagh. Dundrum's
inspirational captain Kieran Walsh
went on to deliver the last score of
the game to tie up a superb victory
for Dundrum.
Unlike previous
games Dundrum fought hard to the
bitter end and didn't concede late
goals. This resoluteness was paramount
in securing the victory. Best for the
Duns on the night were Martin
Melville, Colm Morgan and Philip
Shields in defence, Aaron Doyle and
Kieran Walsh around the middle of the
park and Paddy Doran, Paul McComiskey
and Martin Coughlan in the forwards.
Bredagh look
everybit a potential Division 3 side.
Their goalkeeper did really well,
saving numerous goalbound shots
throughout the game. Conal O'Neill was
the pick of their defence which saw
Rory McCaughey put in a decent hour.
McConnell battled hard in midfield
especially early in the first half
when he was particularly dominant.
However, it is in attack were Bredagh
are most potent. Cleary can do almost
everything while Conall Toland showed
his pedigree with some excellent solo
play.
This result was
revenge for Dundrum. It banished that
disastrous wet and miserable May
night in Cherryvale to the doldrums of
the mind.

Down Minor B
Football Championship Quarter Final
Dundrum 4-15
Newry Shamrocks 3-04
Dundrum's ace
marksmen Conor McShane, Chris Hogg
and Paul McComiskey combined
brilliantly to send Shamrocks
spiralling out of the B Championship
at the Quarter Final stage.
The three scoring
aces hit a total of 4-13 between
them to dent an expectant Shamrock's
hopes of progression.
Dundrum set
out their stall early on. In the
first five minutes Paul McComiskey
scored two great points either side
of Conor McShane and Chris Hogg's
goals. Shamrocks replied with a goal
and a point but two strikes from
Chris Hogg and a wonderful
individual effort from wing back
Declan Kavanagh give the Duns a six
point cushion after 22 minutes.
After Shamrocks
began to settle, Dundrum faded out
for a period. The Newry side went on
to bag a second goal. They followed
this up with two points after Chris
Hogg had momentarilly brought the
Duns back into it.
As the half
hour approached the homeside gave
themselves a shake and points
emerged from the boot of McComiskey
and Paul Rooney. Shamrocks weighed
in with a late free but they went in
at the break trailing by four
points.
The second
half proved to be a major mismatch.
Dundrum converted 2-07 with the
Shamrocks only managing a goal.
Chris Hogg got the party started
with a 21 yard free and the tigerish
McComiskey tagged on with a
quickfire point. McComiskey then
added a goal after some great work
by Conor McShane. Then moments later
Dundrum won a penalty and the
confident Hogg was on hand to
dispatch to the net to put 12 points
in it.
With the game
entering the last quarter Dundrum
were content to stroke the ball over
the bar at every opportunity. Hogg
whacked over a free, McShane tapped
over from close range and McComiskey
floated over a mammoth sideline ball
all in the space of two minutes.
As the match
neared it's end Shamrocks were
fortunate to get a goal after a
Dundrum defensive mixup. However,
the homeside went on to end the game
on a high. McShane and the
diminuitive Hogg pointed to bring to
an end a superb footballing show
from the Duns.
Despite
McComiskey, McShane and Hogg
dominating proceedings, the Dundrum
victory was built on good
foundations. Hugh Robb and Marc
Cunningham marshalled the defence
with great authority but they and
their comrades may be disappointed
with conceding three soft goals.
Declan Kavanagh and Barry Melville
used their wing back berths to lay
on a host of options for the
forwards. Michael Rooney and Martin
Melville worked their socks off in
the middle of the park and their
relentless work ethic proved
invaluable to the cause. Shane
Kavanagh, Paul Rooney and Mark Smith
were industrious throughout the hour
in the three other forward
positions. Rooney was particularly
impressive, showing well and winning
a ton of possession.
