East Down Minor League Section B
St Johns/Dromara 0-04 v Dundrum 0-18
The St Johns/Dromara combination suffered
their second defeat within a week as
Dundrum opened their campaign with a
win at a very blustery Drumnaquoile
pitch on Sunday afternoon.
It was the home side who had the wind
advantage in the first half but they
failed to use it to it's potential and
they only managed a return of four scores.
Midfielder Conor McCombe was their dangerman
in this period setting up his sides
first two efforts and converting two
of his own. The combination had most
of the possession in this half and Dundrum
were forced to live on scraps. They
opened through McComiskey and finished
the half hour strongly with McShane
and another two scores from McComiskey
levelling the affair at the break.
The
second half was all Dundrum and with
with the wind gathering pace they ran
rampant. St Johns/Dromara only managed
to get the ball into the opposition's
half three times during this period.
Jordan Kennedy was solid between the
sticks pulling off a couple of great
saves.Tight marking at the back from
Patrick Cunningham, Marc Cunningham
and Kieran McShane allied with some
superb attacks from the wing half backs
Declan Kavanagh and Barry Melville helped
Dundrum move forward well. This was
bolstered with some strong midfield
play from Martin Melville and Michael
Rooney who battled hard with Kelly and
McCombe all day.
With
the home side failing to impose themselves
Dundrum created lots of chances. Shane
Kavanagh was unlucky in front of goal
on a couple of occasions and substitute
Shaun Cunningham had a an excellent
goalbound shot denied by the impressive
combination goalkeeper. Dundrum executed
some very pleasing moves and they seemed
to pull off time and time again. Paul
McComiskey was given a lot of space
with excellent support from Paul Rooney
and Sean Dillon. McComiskey punished
duly with nine points as Shane Kavanagh
(0-01), Conor McShane (0-02) and Mark
Smith (0-01) added to their sides tally
late on. Substitutes Richard Fitzsimons
and Chris McCann also impressed when
they came into the fray in the last
ten minutes.
Overall the scoreline may be a little
bit flattering on Dundrum. St Johns/Dromara
seem to be a far better team than this
performance suggests and if they had
of been more economical with their possession
in the wind assisted first half, the
scoreline might have been a lot closer.
Dundrum were impressive though. They
moved the ball well, defended resolutely
and seemed to bond as a team.
Tougher
games lie ahead but this was an extremely
encouraging start.
