Dundrum 4-13 Bredagh 1-05
Dundrum continued their bright start
to the season with this facile win over
an out of sorts Bredagh offering at
Ballykinlar on Sunday afternoon.
After beating St Johns/Dromara in the
first game Dundrum expected a stiffer
challenge from the Belfast lads but
this failed to materialise. Bredagh
arrived for the game late and had little
time to prepare. They were slow getting
out of the blocks and this let Dundrum
run up a hefty lead by the 20th minute.
First to break the duck was wing forward
Conor McShane from a set peice. He then
followed this up with a well hit effort
from play. Bredagh momentarilly ate
in to this with their first of the day
but this was quickly countered by Chris
Hogg's long range effort.
The next ten minutes saw the homeside
dominate. Hogg added another point before
the ball crept in to the Bredagh net
after Mark Smith forced the full back
in to a costly mistake. Shortly after
Smith was on target again, this time
slotting over the bar from close range.
With all the momentum on Dundrum's side
they pushed forward with greater conviction
and were rewarded with a fine goal from
Conor McShane.
Trailing by ten points Bredagh realised
that they had to up the ante. In a swift
move down the field they found the Dundrum
net and all of a sudden the scoreline
took on a very different look. Dundrum's
management of Colm Morgan and Mark Doherty
proceeded to rally their troops after
the goal and this payed immediate dividends
as in the final six minutes the homeside
knocked over five scores in succession.
Martin Melville, Shane Kavanagh, Michael
Rooney and a double from Chris Hogg
helped Dundrum to a twelve point lead
at half time.
The second half saw Bredagh improve
but they never seriously looked like
pegging back the Duns. Like the first
half it was man of the match Conor McShane
who got proceedings underway with an
excellent score from wide on the right.
Shortly after Dundrum were awarded a
45'. Chris Hogg placed it on the ground
and struck it with a great deal of venom.
Then just as it looked like falling
short, up popped Mark Smith to get the
flick on. The ball ghosted by the Bredagh
keeper and now Dundrum had a healthy
sixteen point lead.
At this point Dundrum were dominating
the possession percentages. They had
a lot of chances but Bredagh were holding
deep and thwarting most attacks with
some excellent tackling and blocking.
However, this meant that their attacking
options were limited.
With the game entering the final quarter
Dundrum started to reduce the tempo.
Chris Hogg slotted over his last of
the day after some laboured build up
play. Bredagh hit back with another
two quickfire points but this seemed
immaterial as the game was well beyond
their grasp at this moment.
The final exchanges were all Dundrum
and it was left to the impressive McShane
to round the day off. His first was
a slick strike from the outside of the
boot that glided over the bar. His second
and the last score of the affair was
superb long range goal that would of
left the best of keepers struggling.
This was a good day at the office for
Dundrum. Kennedy was assured in goals
and had superb support from his full
back line, especially Marc Cunningham.
The half back line worked efficiently
with Paul Rooney settling in to his
new position very well. The midfield
was on top throughout with Martin Melville
and Michael Rooney doing all the hard
graft which enabled Chris Hogg and Conor
McShane the time and space to exhibit
their skills and trickery. Other forwards
to impress were Shane Kavanagh and Mark
Smith.
Bredagh had a bad day but they will
be back. Dundrum have now made it two
wins out of two but tougher challenges
lie ahead in the coming weeks.
