ACFL Division 4
Dundrum 2-10 St Michaels 1-10
At 7.38pm on
Thursday the 23rd of June 2005, St
Michaels were the only unbeaten club
side in the Down League setup. By
8.56pm that same evening, that
record was banished to the history
books by a confident and skillful
Dundrum team who romped home by a
goal in an absolute thriller.
However, from
the throw in it looked like this one
was going to be mere shooting
practice for the Magheralin men.
They racked up five excellent scores
in the space of thirteen minutes to
shock a stuttering Dundrum team.
It took
nineteen minutes of hard hitting
action before the homeside
registered their first point. This
came in the form of a Cormac Venney
14' off the ground. St Michaels
replied with a well taken score from
Bryan Sweeney but Venney responded
with a free. Then with five minutes
of action remaining in the half Pat
McDade's troops fired over their
last of the first period. After this
they became over confident and
failed to predict any type of a
resurgence from the Duns.
The failure to
predict such a comeback led to St
Michaels downfall. With three
minutes of the half remaining Johnny
McMullan rose highest to field a
Colm King kickout. A smart shimmy
followed which allowed McMullan the
time and space to look up and find a
man. That man was Neil McLoughlin,
who once in possession delivered a
pin point pass to Conor McShane who
squeezed the ball past Peter
Cunningham for a tremendous goal.
This was the turning point, possibly
even the match winner.
Although still in
the lead by a point St Michaels
still possessed an air of
confidence. However, from the moment
that ball was thrown in there was
only going to be one winner and that
was Dundrum. They seemed untouchable
in the second half with Conor
McKibben marshalling the defence,
Kieran Walsh commanding midfield and
Neil McLoughlin orchestrating play
in the forwards.
Despite being the
better of the two teams in the
second period, Dundrum conceded two
early scores to leave them trailing
by a goal. However, by the end of
the end of the first quarter that
deficit was cancelled and for the
first time in the game the teams
were level. Cormac Venney, Kieran
Walsh and Johnny McMullan were the
scoregetters in what was a frantic
period of play.
A Bryan Sweeney
effort fifteen minutes in
represented St Michael's last point
of the game. From this moment on the
passion and drive of the Dundrum
players coupled with the astute
switches made by the management
meant that there was no way back for
the Magheralin men.
Five consecutive
scores from the homeside put six
points between the entities. Two
points apeice from man of the match
Cormac Venney and the ever improving
Johnny McMullan were the precursor
to a match winning goal from impact
sub Cathal Kielty who was the ever
grateful recipient of an inch
perfect pass from Venney.
Unlike previous
games Dundrum fought tooth and nail
to the death. Players like Conor
McShane rose to the occasion
magnificently, throwing every last
thing they had at the
opposition. This was despite St
Michaels getting a quickfire
goal which in hindsight was only a
consolation strike. Added to this
was a courageous goal line clearance
from Neil McComiskey which really
typified the Duns night
