East Down U-16 League Section B: Darragh Cross 0-09  Dundrum 2-04

By Marc Mac Siomoin [marc_mac_siomoin@yahoo.co.uk]

With thirty seconds remaining on the clock Darragh Cross must have thought that they were home and dry. They had just slammed over four scores in succession to put themselves in the lead by two points.

Dundrum looked down and out. The seconds were ticking away. Then all of a sudden a tense silence was broken by a mentor on the sideline. 'Remember the Abbey!', he yelled.

At this point Dundrum attacker Sean O'Rourke picked up a breaking ball around the middle of the park. He then set off goalwards drawing a host of Darragh Cross defenders to him. This gave Conal McKee space wide on the left. O'Rourke then quickly offloaded the leather to McKee who darted towards Duncan Miskelly's goal. Without a hint of hesitation McKee let fly from thirty yards out. The ball glided through the air before smashing Miskelly's net. It was despair for Darragh and delight for Dundrum.

McKee might have replicated Chris Coffey's heroics on St Patrick's Day but over the hour Darragh may have just deserved the win. They went in at the break a point down. An early goal from Dundrum's Sean O'Rourke dented Darragh's early ambitions but they came back and scored five points over the course of half an hour. However, this was offset by further Dundrum points from O'Rourke (0-02) and Warnock (0-01).

The second half saw both teams hit a lot of wides. Darragh also managed to hit the bar twice. O'Rourke opened the Duns second half account but Darragh went on to nail four scores in a row over a twenty five minute period. In truth they could of had a lot more.

The final five minutes saw the St Mochai's Park outfit hold on to the ball wisely. Dundrum were hardly given a sniff of the O'Neills as their opponents tried to cling on to their lead. Then as the final thirty seconds arrived Dundrum performed a Houdini. O'Rourke the creator, McKee the very grateful recipient.
