The
transformation of
Carryduff's Adrian Scullion
from a tight man marker to
an ace marksman in front of
goal proved to be Dundrum's
undoing in a tense
Championship encounter.
The Derry
native playing at full
forward was the difference
between the teams. He
converted two scores before
half time and then added a
further three after the
break to seal the Duff's
passage in to the quarter
finals.
The game
was quick to come to life
with Dundrum first to
register through a Paul
McComiskey free. Carryduff
replied soon enough when
Ronan Lawlor tapped over a
simple enough set peice.
After this Ronan McLaughlin
was given the chance to give
Carryduff the lead and this
he did with a well struck
21'.
Ten
minutes of action had passed
by when a little bit of
nastiness crept in. An off
the ball fracas between
Dundrum's Neil John
McLaughlin and Carryduff's
Gavin Kelly resulted in both
being sent to the line after
receiving straight reds.
The
sendings off created a bit
more space on the tight
Drumaness pitch. Dundrum
perservered with the long
ball in to their corner
forwards but ultimately it
didnt always pay off. On the
otherhand Carryduff seemed
content enough to drill the
ball in to Scullion. It
proved to be their best
option.
Midway
through the half Ronan
McLaughlin increased the
Duff's lead by two before
Scullion rose to the
occasion with two excellent
solo points. However, a host
of bad misses from both
sides kept the scoring chart
low as the break approached.
Dundrum
increased the pressure for
the last couple of minutes
and they were rewarded when
Cormac Venney snuck in to
raise the white flag to
leave three in it at the
interval.
Both
sides came out for the 2nd
half unchanged and the
pattern of the game
basically remained the same.
Some awaful shooting was
interspersed with some fine
point taking and it was the
shooting excellence of Ronan
McLaughlin (0-01) and Adrian
Scullion (0-02) that
propelled the Duff in to a
commanding six point lead
after ten minutes of play.
Then in a
quick burst Dundrum once
more give themselves hope
when corner forwards Chris
Hogg and Cormac Venney
grabbed themselves a point
apeice to bring four points
back between the factions.
As the
final quarter approached
Carryduff tried to hang on
to their lead by maintaining
possession while Dundrum
started to chase the game by
upping their intensity
considerably. However, it
was the expierience of
playing football at a higher
level that seemed to shine
through. Once again Scullion
(0-01) and McLaughlin (0-01)
drew blood to make six
points the difference
between the sides.
Then out
of the blue came the Dundrum
revival. It was kickstarted
when the unusually tame Paul
McComiskey glided over a
45'. What followed was a
goal of pure class. The
tricky Chris Hogg was on
hand to find the Carryduff
net after a piercing solo
run sliced open the Duff
defence. Faced one on one
with the keeper Hogg
confidently blasted the ball
high in to the net to
raptorous applause from the
Dundrum support. The Duns
were now back within two
points of Tom Potter's
charges.
Carryduff
were now on the back foot
and when McComiskey tapped
over an easy enough free the
Duff's lead was now slashed
to one point. A host of
other teams may have
panicked but the Duff showed
their resolve to hold out
for the final few minutes.
Ronan
McLaughlin (0-01) and Sean
Molloy (0-02) all registered
late on to secure victory
for their side and a passage
through to the quarter
finals.
Adrian
Scullion was the main man on
show for the victorious
South Belfast men and his
tally of five from play made
all the difference. Others
to impress for the victors
were Aidan McGirr at full
back, Ryan Hanna in midfield
and the deadly pairing of
Sean Molloy and Ronan
McLaughlin up front.
Just as
vital as Scullion's scoring
stats was the man marking
job that former Down and An
Riocht man John Lavery did
on Dundrum dangerman Paul
McComiskey. The normally
free scoring McComiskey was
well shackled by the
athletic centre half back
and as a result McComiskey
failed to register from
play.
Overall
Carryduff just about
deserved their victory. Some
well worked possession moves
and score taking made all
the difference and now the
cosmopolitan suburbians can
look forward to a
good tussle in the last
eight.
