Bredagh began their
2006 League campaign with an excellent
win over a stuttering Dundrum
offering. The Belfast lads looked
sharper throughout and with a slight
physical edge they proved too hot to
handle.
A superb opening
ten minutes saw the maroons coast by
the seasiders. Two goals and a point
came their way before the Duns even
got a sniff of possession. Paul Rooney
attempted to get the homesters back
into it with a double but Bredagh hit
back midway through with a goal and a
point.
Despite squandering
a few scorable chances towards the end
of the half, Bredagh always looked in
control despite Declan Kavanagh's two
frees.
The first fifteen
minutes of the second half saw both
teams exchange scores on three
occasions. Aidan Rooney opened
Dundrum's account while Bredagh
replied with a well taken goal. Marc
Cunningha m then rattled one over
before the Ravenhill Road side
converted a free. Declan Kavanagh then
grabbed Dundrum's penultimate effort
of the affair but this instigated a
productive period from Bredagh which
saw them slam over three on the trot.
The last ten
minutes saw the Belfast men maintain
possession wisely. In the process
though they shipped some efficient
tackling from the Dundrum backline.
Nevertheless they withstood the
pressure to raise the white flag one
more time. Dundrum's Sean O'Rourke
finished the game off with possibly
the score of the match. The youngest
player on the pitch took hold of the
ball in his own full back line. After
evading his marker he went on a
marauding run down the pitch evading
no less than five tackles before
expertly chipping his shot over the
black spot.
Bredagh looked the
more determined side in this one. They
have been training hard since November
and it showed. They used the long ball
to great effect to rip through t he
Duns backline. Their finishing was of
a high standard and they were the more
balanced side overall.
Despite the
scoreline there were some positives
from a Dundrum point of view. The
tough tackling of Micheal O'Rourke,
Kieran McShane, Barry Melville and
Anthony Mageean was instrumental in
rebuking many Bredagh attacks. Marc
Cunningham and Declan Kavanagh's
workrate and committment in midfield
shone out while Paul Rooney and Sean
O'Rourke's ball winning skills give
cause for optimism.
With this being the
first game of the season it would be
premature to predict the future for
these teams. Nevertheless, if Bredagh
can maintain this level of performance
then they will be very hard to stop.
