East Down Minor Football League
Section B
Dromara 2-09 Dundrum 1-06
Dominant
midfield displays from Dromara
pair Eugene O'Hare and Colm Kelly
helped edge the men from the hills
to a convincing six point win over
Dundrum.
The towering
midfield duo had absolute control
of the middle sector and their
high fielding was very impressive
to watch.
Dundrum had the
better of the exchanges in the
first ten minutes. Declan Kavanagh
got the game under way with a
point. Wing forward Richard
Fitzsimons then applied a simple
finish to the Dromara net after
Aidan Rooney had persevered to
keep the ball in play.
However,
Dromara soon regrouped and with
the wind behind their backs they
fired over four scores in quick
succession. The pick of these
being a 45 yard effort from the
robust Jonathan Ward.
Paul Rooney
pointed a free on 21 minutes for
the away side but this was to be
their last score o f the half.
Dromara stormed the Duns backline
and a goal and two points ensured
that they held a four point lead
at the break.
Dundrum began
the second half with a lot more
purpose. Sean O'Rourke cancelled
out O'Hare's opener when he raced
through to raise the white flag to
put a goal between the sides. The
Duns were holding a lot of
possession but poor shooting and
an inability to curb Dromara's
counter attacks cost them dearly.
Dromara used
their possession wisely and as
they pushed forward they were
rewarded with their second goal
and a point.
For the last
sixteen minutes Dundrum continued
to attack. Yet it was poor passing
and balls dropping short that
hindered their progress. Despite
Paul Rooney (0-01) and Declan
Kavanagh (0-02) converting the
Duns knew they could of had a lot
more.
As the game
fizzled out tempers frayed and
Marc Cunningham saw red for the
baysiders. His side lost momentum
and man of the match O'Hare f
inished off the game with a great
point to seal Dromara's second win
of the campaign.
As mentioned
earlier it was the sterling work
in midfield of Kelly and O'Hare
that provided the platform for
this win. James O'Rourke, Conor
Burns and Jonathan Ward were
greatful recipients of the
aformentioned duo's hard won
possession in the forwards.
Further back it was big Archie
McKay who marshalled the defence
with supreme authority.
Dundrum lost
out in the physical stakes and if
they are to improve they will need
to work more as a team. Paul
Rooney and Barry Melville showed
glimpses of class in a game the
away side will want to forget
about very quickly.
Dromara's
desire to win was very evident.
They were more cohesive and they
worked very hard for each other.
This win for them was fully
merited.
