Dundrum fall to
Ardglass - May 2006
An
unlucky Dundrum side fell to their
second defeat of the season against
Ardglass. It was Dundrum’s slow start
that ultimately cost them. Within 5
minutes of the throw in Steven Smyth had
slotted over a point and Neil Taggart
had burst through a lacklustre Dundrum
defence to coolly finish beyond a
helpless Colm King. A Kieran Walsh free
and a Cormac Venney effort got Dundrum
onto the scoreboard, before the Ardtole
men replied via Steven Deegan to leave a
solitary goal between the teams.
Chris Hogg got Dundrum within two,
before Marty Curran and Liam Mullan
knocked over points. Walsh and Hogg
cancelled these efforts out with two
free kicks. Mullan and Steven Deegan hit
over two more points with Cormac Venney
getting his second off the night to
leave the scores 1-6 to 0-6 at the half.
Ardglass came flying out of the blocks
at the start of the second half with
their impressive young corner forward
Liam Mullan rattling the Dundrum net and
following this up with a free kick.
Walsh, Mullan and Venney exchanged
points before slack Dundrum defending
let Mullan in for his second goal of the
night to leave the score 3-8 to 0-8.
At
this stage, Dundrum looked dead and
buried, however they produced a stirring
fightback with points from Hogg,
Coughlin and Doyle (2). Veteran Marty
Coughlin also set up a goal for Shane
Kavanagh to leave only two points
between the teams entering the last five
minutes. However, Dundrum were
unfortunate in that they couldn’t find
the necessary scores to get at least a
well deserved point from the game as
Dundrum’s tormentor Mullan scored
another free kick. This was followed by
the final score of the game from the
impressive Kieran Walsh.
These two young teams were extremely
well matched. If Dundrum had managed to
show a little more composure in front of
goal they would have surely beaten the
home team. However, this would have been
harsh on the Ardtole men. They played
some good football at times with
excellent performances from Steven and
Paul Smith, the two Deegans at midfield,
and young Liam Mullan in the corner.
Best for Dundrum on the night were John
Hurley, Aaron Doyle, Kieran Walsh and
Marty Coughlin, while Cormac Venney and
Chris Hogg put in a lot of work down the
left side of the attack.
