Dundrum Notes - 20th Nov

* The club held it's Annual Dinner Dance in the Slieve Donard on Friday past. A great night was had by all 130 in attendance and the club would like to thank current Down Senior player Danny Hughes for being the special guest.

All of the speeches were very well recieved with outgoing Chairman Micheal Rodgers stressing the need for an extra pitch for the club as well as more involvement from club members in regards to the running of the Car Boot Sale.

The Minor awards were the first to be presented on the night. Manager Colm Morgan told the audience how the Minors had a decent enough season finishing third in their League section as well being represented on the County Minor team by Paul McComiskey and Marc Cunningham. Colm also thanked the Ballykinlar club for their continued co-operation with the amalgamation and particular praise was reserved for Ballykinlar's Paddy Doherty who was also involved in the Minor management.

On the awards end of things Shaun Cunningham picked up Sportsman of the Year while Paul McComiskey received Player of the Year.

After the Minor awards were handed out the highlight of the night arrived in the form of Philip McGrattan's annual barnstorming speech. Philip praised the numbers that turned out for the Reserves this year and thanked every player for their contribution. Philip then announced that himself and co-manager Liam McKibbin were standing down. Interspersed throughout the speech were many of Philip's hilarious anecdotes aswell as the usual 'mickey' taking of some of the players in attendance.

The Reserve awards this year went to 'Gentleman' Gerard Graham who was very deserving of the Sportsman of the Year award while the genial Paddy Doran picked up Player of the Year.

Philip then passed over to Senior team manager John McShane who reflected on what was a successful enough season for the Seniors. John alluded to the fact that the Seniors picked up the East Down and Down Junior 7's titles whilst managing to reach the Semi Finals of the All Ireland Junior 7's in St Judes. John also praised those who had helped out in anyway during the year and enthused that 2006's mid table position could definitely be improved on in 2007. A special thanks was relayed to team coach John Morgan, selectors Philip McGrattan and Liam McKibben and physio Grainne Walsh.

Firstly, John awarded the Senior Sportsman of the Year to Paul McComiskey before designating the Senior Player of the Year to Philip Shields. Shortly after Philip Shields made it a magnificent double as he collected the Seamus Rice Memorial Cup (Player's Player of the Year.)

The final award of the night was Clubman of the Year. This went to the hardworking Kieran McKibben. Kieran's behind the scenes work with finances, the car boot sale and committee matters has been unstinting over the years and this award was long overdue.

Finally the club would like to thank the Slieve Donard Hotel for a wonderful evening.

* The U-21's played their first game of the season against Cnoc Ni Drinn (Loughinisland, Teconnaught, Downpatrick) on Sunday afternoon. The game was played in atrocious conditions with a gale force wind and pelting rain.

Naomh Seosamh led 0-04 to 0-03 at the break. The wind advantage obviously helped the home side with points coming from Paul McComiskey (0-01), Paul Rooney (0-01) and Declan Kavanagh (0-02). Cnoc Ni Drinn had Seamus O'Hare (0-03) to thank for their total. During the 1st half both teams were reduced to fourteen men with Naomh Seosamh's Dilly Murphy and Cnoc Ni Drinn's Paddy Flanagan receiving their marching orders.

With the wind picking up in intensity Cnoc Ni Drinn started to pile on the pressure. Despite having Seamus O'Hare sent off they won the 2nd half convincingly scoring twelve points compared to Naomh Seosamh's no score return.

Naomh Seosamh: C.King, M.Rooney, B.Mageean, K.McShane, D.Kavanagh (0-02), M.Melville, G.Grant, M.Smith, A.Robb, C.McShane, P.McComiskey (0-01), P.Rooney (0-01), C.Hogg, M.Robb, R.Fitzsimons. Subs: D.Murphy, M.Willoughby, S.Willoughby, M.O'Rourke, S.Kavanagh

Final Score: Naomh Seosamh 0-04  Cnoc Ni Drinn 0-15

Naomh Seosamh's 1st half performance was very encouraging and now a tilt at the B Championship can be mapped out. The lads have received a bye in to the Semi Finals with this last four game being played on Sunday the 3rd of December.

There will be training on Friday night in Ballykinlar at 7pm sharp while another session will take place on Sunday morning.

The folowing players are requested to attend:
