Paul McComiskey's
double whammy
proved to be the
catlyst for Dundrum
in this revenge
victory over old
foes Teconnaught.
McComiskey's two
majors were the
result of some
very well structured
approach play
from his forward
counterparts.
Infact all night
the Dundrum attack
ran like clockwork
and this ensured
the spoils in
what was always
going to be a
tense affair.
It was Teconnaught
who made all the
running at the
start of the game.
In his first match
back since a long
term layoff Conor
Heath made his
comeback with
aplomb. The pint
sized corner forward
found the net
after three minutes
much to the delight
of the home support.
However, Teconnaught's
joy was short
lived as the sharpshooting
McComiskey pulled
a goal back immediately
for the visitors.
The move that
ended with the
three pointer
originated from
Colum King's short
kickout to midfielder
Kieran Walsh.
When Walsh collected
the pass he fed
the ball in to
Martin Coughlan
at speed. The
quick thinking
Coughlan then
offloaded to the
darting Cormac
Venney who then
flicked the ball
on to McComiskey
who was bursting
through the 21'
yard line. McComiskey
used all his pace
to evade Eoin
Flanagan before
he rasped his
shot in off the
left post to the
net. Dundrum were
now back on level
terms.
By this stage
the game was opening
up and in the
11th minute Heath
converted a free
which was then
added to by a
somewhat fortunate
goal by Paul Mulholland.
Mulholland had
the intelligence
and the sharpness
to react quick
enough when Dundrum's
netminder King
and corner back
Neil McComiskey
collided in the
box. The ball
spilled as Mulholland
then fisted to
the net to put
his team in the
lead by four points.
As the half progressed
Dundrum began
to settle and
1-04 without reply
came their way.
A 45' from McComiskey
got the ball rolling
before efforts
from Cormac Venney
and Aaron Doyle
brought the minimum
between the sides.
In the 22nd minute
the Duns captain
Kieran Walsh levelled
the game with
a free before
McComiskey struck
gold for the second
time with another
well taken goal.
The increasingly
influential Barry
Rogan did pull
a point back for
the homesters
but a another
free from McComiskey
on the half hour
mark left John
McShane's side
in charge by three
at the break.
Just like they
had done in the
1st half, Teconnaught
came out with
all guns blazing.
Early scores from
Rogan and burly
midfielder Kieran
McNamara kept
the Rann Road
side in touch
but three on the
trot from Kieran
Walsh (0-02) and
Chris Hogg (0-01)
kept Dundrum's
four point lead
alive.
As the third quarter's
end approached
disaster struck
for GP Mulholland's
men. Lively corner
forward Barry
Rogan received
a red card for
headbutting. Then
shortly after
full forward Henry
Green got his
second yellow
as Teconnaught
were reduced to
thirteen men.
Nevertheless,
Annacloy's finest
kept plugging
away through Conor
Heath (0-01) but
scores from McComiskey
(0-01) and Walsh
(0-01) kept the
Duns noses in
front. With Dundrum
closing up shop
Teconnaught found
scores hard to
come by and in
the last ten minutes
Heath swapped
scores on two
occasions with
Walsh but in the
end Teconnaught
were always going
to have too much
to do. The final
score of the night
arrived on the
hour mark as Paul
McComiskey floated
over a glorious
chance from play.
Dundrum knew at
the full time
whistle that they
had gotten revenge
over a Teconnaught
side who had beaten
them well at the
start of the season.
It was a job well
done. However,
on the 11th of
August these two
teams will lock
horns again in
the 1st Round
of the IFC in
Downpatrick. League
form will go out
the window and
all in attendance
can expect another
humdinger of a
contest between
these two fiercest
of rivals.
