Down ACFL Division 3 - Bredagh 2-18 Dundrum 2-09
The Enda Gormley Show broadcast live from Cherryvale on Friday night and what a performance the host had. The 41 year old former All Ireland Champion rolled back the years with a vintage performance. In the end he racked up 2-13 and single handedly condemned Dundrum to their third defeat in four outings.
Gormley proved to be unmarkable and with some well placed long balls coming in for him from every direction he had plenty to feed off. The Duns tried two men on him but neither had the desired effect and as the game progressed the Maghera native grew in confidence.
At halftime Bredagh were looking very comfortable. They led by nine points with Gormley responsible for the majority of their scores. Dundrum did sneak in on occasion through Declan Kavanagh, Kieran Walsh and Cormac Venney but it was the Belfast men who seemed to have the bit between their teeth as they geared up for the 2nd half.
Dundrum showed better in the final thirty minutes and by the full time whistle they had managed as many scores as Bredagh, that being 2-06. Goals came from Paul Rooney and the veteran Paddy Doran but the fearless Gormley responded to each of Dundrum's promptings with two goals of his own.
With defences improving slightly during this period both entities were limited to six points each. Conall Toland, Conor Owens, Kevin Rice and Ollie McWilliams chipped in to help Gormley out while Paul Rooney (0-01), Cormac Venney (0-01), Declan Kavanagh (0-01), Johnny McMullan (0-01) and Kieran Walsh (0-02) all registered for the Duns.
Despite getting to within one point of the Ravenhill Road men at one stage in the second period, Dundrum never really looked like toppling the victors. Bredagh were just too strong and with Antrim Senior manager Jody Gormley calling the shots in defence and Irish News columnist Paddy Heaney dictating orders from midfield the Maroons were well primed for victory.
Others to impress for the winners were Mark Diamond, Rory McCaughey and Raymond Gormley. Dundrum were best served by Colum King in goals, Declan Kavanagh in defence, Aaron Doyle in midfield and Cormac Venney up front.
Another couple of wins for Bredagh should see them secure a playoff berth while the Duns will need to win most of their seven remaining games if they want to achieve a top four placing.
