Down ACFL Division 3: Dundrum 1-15 Bright 0-03
In 2005 Bright ran Dundrum extremely close in the JFC decider in St Patrick's Park, Newcastle. Nearly two years on from this a very different looking Bright side ventured to Dundrum to attempt an act of revenge on a Duns team who so cruelly denied them Championship glory on that sunny October afternoon.
However, Kyran Smyth's charges proved to be no match for an industrious Dundrum unit. The Ballynoe based team only managed to rack up 0-03 and just one score from play. Their quest for payback will have to wait another day.
Without really setting hearts racing the Duns were workmanlike about their performance. To be honest they never really got out of first gear but looked comfortable throughout.
It was Paul McComiskey who got the first score of the night with a well hit 21'. Goal poacher Chris Hogg followed this up with a three pointer before Paul Rooney and Declan Kavanagh opened their individual accounts.
Then in a five minute spell Bright exerted a bit of pressure on the Dundrum backline. Midfielder Chris Tumelty chipped in with a point while Neil Stranney popped over a free. But it was Dundrum who cruised into halftime with a tally of 0-05. Two Kieran Walsh 45's and three scores on the bounce from Paul McComiskey left Bright facing a nine point deficit at the break.
A superb angled effort from Martin Coughlan got the Dundrum bandwagon rolling at the start of the second period. Paul Rooney, who has looked to be the Duns most potent forward this season, then followed Coughlan's score with a quickfire double to bring his total in the game to 0-03.
Bright's only score of the 2nd half came from a Frederick O'Connor free. After this the Ballynoe men went in to freefall and with the Duns bringing on five sets of fresh legs the Division 3 basement strugglers were overun for the last quarter of the game.
Two further Kieran Walsh points and two delightfully weighted scores from roving wingback Declan Kavanagh closed the game out and sealed a precious two points for John McShane's charges.
In all fairness to Bright having to cope with the un-availability of Mark Stitt and Stephen Stranney was always going to prove to be difficult. However, some of their more experienced players failed to step up to the plate and in the end they can have no issues with their defeat.
Dundrum were best served by a very confident Colm King in goal, Philip Shields, Jonathan McMullan and Declan Kavanagh at the back, Kieran Walsh in midfield and Paul Rooney and Martin Coughlan in the forward line.
