Despite
missing
a
hatful
of
chances
in
the
1st
half
and
being
totally
dominated
by
Mitchels
in
the
2nd
half
Dundrum
somehow
managed
to
hold
on
for
a
precious
away
victory.
Buoyed
on
by
their
inspirational
captain
Kieran
Walsh
in
the
middle
of
the
park
the
Duns
battled
away
to
the
end
and
with
a
hint
of
luck
on
their
side
they
snuck
a
victory
in
the
dying
minutes.
In
all
truthfullness
Dundrum
should
have
had
this
game
wrapped
up
at
halftime.
They
created
the
vast
majority
of
openings
and
came
close
to
converting
goal
chances
on
three
separate
occasions.
John
McKibben,
Conor
McShane
and
Cormac
Venney
all
had opportunities
for
majors but
fortune
was
not
on
their
side.
However,
one
man
who
made
no
mistake
in
finding
the
net
was
the
in-form
Paul
Rooney.
With
virtually
the
first
attack
of
the
game
Rooney
latched
on
to
Conor
McShane's
perfect
pass.
With
Joe
Price
to
beat
in
the
Mitchels
goal,
Rooney
opted
for
power.
His
shot
ricocheted
off
the
underside
of
the
bar
and
then
eased
itself
over
the
line
to
give
the
Duns
the
perfect
start.
Mitchels
responded
to
this
shellshock
with
a
free
before
John
McKibben
and
Chris
Hogg
pointed
for
Dundrum.
Lazy
fouling
and
inept
tackling
by
the
Duns
backline
then
allowed
Mitchels
to
get
back
in
to
the
game
with
two
more
frees.
With
both
teams
now
settled
it
was
the
Duns
who
seized
the
initiative.
Cormac
Venney
shot
over
the
bar
to
leave
Mitchels
trailing
1-03
to
0-03.
Yet
the
more
the
Duns
attacked
the
more
chances
they
wasted
which
saw
Mitchels
once
more
creep
in
with
two
scores
in
quick
succession.
With
ten
minutes
remaining
in
the
half
Mitchels
rallied
for
an
equaliser
but
it
never
came.
Kieran
Walsh
extended
the
Duns
lead
to
two
before
Mitchels
replied
once
more.
With
more
chances
going
a
begging
for
the
Duns
it
was
left
to
the
set
peice
expertise
of
Kieran
Walsh
(0-02)
and
Cormac
Venney
(0-01)
to
bring
their
side's
total
to
1-07.
Yet
the
last
score
of
the
half
came
Mitchels
way
as
the
Newry
brought
themselves
within
three
points
of
their
visitors.
Whatever
was
said
to
Mitchels
at
halftime
must
have
really
struck
a
chord.
They
came
out
for
the
2nd
half
with
all
guns
blazing
and
for
the
first
twenty
minutes
they
didnt
give
Dundrum
a
look
in.
They
hogged
possession,
picked
up
breaking
ball
at
every
chance
and
constantly
put
pressure
on
the
Dundrum
rearguard.
1-03
without
reply
came
their
way
in
their
period
of
domination.
This
put
them
three
points
clear.
However,
in
hindsight
1-03
really
wasnt
a
huge
return
for
twenty
minutes
of
domination
and
there
was
always
an
inkling
that
the
Duns
would
have
themselves
one
last
hurrah.
It
took
a
long
range
free
from
Kieran
Walsh
to
bring
the
Duns
back
in
to
the
reckoning.
Mitchels
did
hit
back
with
a
solitary
score
but
a
converted
penalty
by
that
man
Walsh
again
turned
the
game
on
it's
head
once
more.
This
spot
kick
was
enough
to
put
the
away
side
back
in
the
lead
by a
point.
With
Mitchels
waning
the
Duns
assumed
control
and
with
John
Hurley
and
Aaron
Doyle really
upping their performances
in
the
middle
of
the
park
the
forwards
began
to
see
more
of
the
ball.
Scores
from
the
talismanic
Paul
Rooney
and
the
hard
working
Conor
McShane
produced
a
two
point
lead
but
a
potential
disaster
was
averted
as a
Mitchels
penalty
hit
the
post
with
three
minutes
remaining.
The
missed
penalty
proved
to
be a
repreive
for
the
Duns
and
a
late
Cormac
Venney
point
made
sure
of a
tumultuous
three
point
victory
for
Dundrum's
battlers.
