East Down U-13
League Section
A
St Josephs (Ballykinlar/Dundrum)
8-08 Liatroim
4-03
It was goals galore
at Ballykinlar
on Sunday morning
as St Joes triumphed
over a spirited
Liatroim side
in a keenly fought
encounter.
The Fontenoys
were more than
a match for their
conquerors in
the 1st half but
the homeside monopolised
the 2nd half and
in the end came
out worthy victors.
It was was St
Joseph's midfielder
Oisin McKibben
who got the ball
rolling with the
first score of
the game. Liatroim
quickly followed
suit but two scores
on the trot from
full forward Luke
Hogg put the homeside
in charge with
ten minutes gone.
Shortly after
Hogg's double
Liatroim pulled
one back but this
was swiftly countered
by an excellent
goal by livewire
attacker David
McComiskey.
Three points in
a row for St Joes
followed McComiskey's
goal. Conn Rooney
(0-01) and Luke
Hogg (0-02) done
the damage as
the homesters
opened up a seven
point lead.
With ten minutes
of the half remaining
Liatroim began
to find some form
as they managed
another point.
However, Luke
Hogg was on hand
to dampen their
spirits once more
as he fired to
the net for St
Joe's second goal.
Liatroim did pull
back a major before
the break but
Philip Digney
managed to reply
with a wonder
goal to leave
his side in charge
by nine points
at the interval.
The St Joseph's
management team
made a number
of changes at
the break. These
seemed to work
well and proved
that every single
member of the
panel was perpared
to fight for his/her
place.
The pacey Rory
Kavanagh opened
the scoring before
Michael McShane
got on the end
of a Kavanagh
pass to fire to
the net. Liatroim
responded brilliantly
though and in
the space of three
minutes they converted
two goals, one
a penalty, to
get themselves
within seven points
of their opponents.
As the game approached
the final quarter
St Joes upped
the intensity
of their play
and began to dominate
proceedings. David
McComiskey weighed
in with his second
goal before Rory
Kavanagh blasted
two further three
pointers to the
net to effectively
kill the game
off.
With only minutes
remaining Captain
Conn Rooney grabbed
his second point
of the game before
Liatroim grabbed
a consolation
goal late on.
However, the best
score of the game
came right on
the hour mark.
David McComiskey
picked the ball
up on the left
wing before embarking
on a trademark
forage forward.
After evading
numerous tackles
he slipped the
ball through to
Niall Walsh. In
an instant Walsh
slammed the ball
to the top corner
to round off a
spectacular move
and seal the lid
on an excellent
St Joseph's performance.
