The club held
a very successful
awards evening
on Friday in the
Grand Banquet
Hall of the Slieve
Donard Hotel.
Nearly 200 patrons
were in attendance
and by all accounts
a great night
was had by all.
After an excellent
three course meal
Chairman Ollie
Forsythe got the
ball rolling with
an introductory
speech. County
Chairman Kevin
Bell followed
him with a few
words before the
special guest
for the night
took to the podium.
In a very well
researched speech
GAA President
Nicky Brennan
alluded to the
success that Dundrum
encountered during
the past year.
He reserved particular
mention to the
U-21 team who
were East Down
B Champions and
to the Senior
team who won Division
3 and gained promotion
to Division 2.
He also raised
a few cheers with
his reference
to the upcoming
local derbies
with Bryansford.
Mr Brennan went
on to talk about
various nationwide
topics in relation
to the GAA. His
anti-GPA comments
raised a chorus
of approval while
he talked at length
about future expenditure
and the new hotline
for club secretaries
to Croke Park.
After his very
informed and enjoyable
talk the presentation
of awards followed.
John McShane kicked
off with the U-21's.
Firstly, captain
Paul McComiskey
was presented
with the McCashin
Cup as he was
captain of the
East Down B winning
side. Then all
the players involved
with the team
received their
East Down winners
medals and their
All County runners
up medals. Following
on from this Aaron
Doyle received
U-21 Sportsman
of the Year and
Martin Melville
received the Player
of the Year accolade.
With the U-21's
completed Reserve
manager Martin
Coughlan took
to the stand.
In a very humorous
speech which even
included a singing
cameo, Martin
awarded Richard
Fitzsimons the
Sportsman of the
Year award and
Paul Rooney the
Player of the
Year gong.
Next up were the
Senior awards.
Senior team coach
John Morgan presented
these. Firstly,
every player that
was involved in
the Division 3
winning team was
called up to receive
their winners
medals. After
this all the panellists
had a huge team
photo taken with
Nicky Brennan.
John then went
on to present
Neil McComiskey
with the Sportsman
of the Year before
a rapturous applause
was given to John
Hurley who attained
the Senior Player
of the Year award.
To round off his
speech John reserved
special praise
for team manger
John McShane,
trainer Eddie
Campbell and team
captain Kieran
Walsh.
Chairman Ollie
Forsythe then
took to the mic
once more to introduce
Martin Walsh.
Martin came to
the stage to present
the Seamus Rice
Memorial Cup for
Player's Player
of the Year to
John Hurley. This
award was voted
for by all players
who had togged
out for the Senior
and Reserve teams
during the year.
Next up was Father
McKenna. He called
on John Kielty
to come to the
stage to present
the Jack Kielty
Memorial Cup for
the Clubman of
the Year. This
year there was
no surprise when
Ollie Forsythe's
name was called
as the recipient.
This year in an
unique gesture
All Ireland winners
associated with
the club were
presented with
special mementoes.
Club Treasurer
Kieran McKibben
then took centre
stage to introduce
the players and
their representatives.
First up was Monica
McKibben who recieved
the award on behalf
of her recently
deceased husband
Willie McKibben.
Willie was a member
of the 1946 All
Ireland Down Junior
winning team.
Next up was Nuala
Carey who represented
her late husband
Jarlath. Jarlath
was an integral
member of the
Down All Ireland
winning sides
of 1960 and 1961.
A team mate of
Jarlath was awarded
next as the goalkeeper
on those two teams
Eddie McKay came
up to recieve
his award.
Henry Flynn was
then invited on
to the podium
to take an award
on behalf of his
late father Danny
Flynn who trained
the All Ireland
winning teams
of the 60's.
Next to be honoured
were the three
All Ireland Minor
medallists from
1987 namely Martin
Carey, John Kielty
and Patrick Kielty.
Martin and John
were both there
in person while
John recieved
Patrick's award
in his absence.
The final two
All Ireland champions
to be celebrated
were Paul McComiskey
and John Morgan.
Paul played a
starring role
in the 2005 Minor
winning team while
John was trainer
of that superb
pack of players.
After this there
was one very important
award left. That
was the Hall of
Fame induction
of club legend
Pat Lennon. This
was Pat's first
Dinnerdance since
1987 and he recieved
an overwhelming
ovation when he
mounted the stage.
Pat has spent
the last 20 years
in Australia and
it was a fine
gesture to the
man to induct
him into the Hall
of Fame.
This concluded
the awards and
Chairman Ollie
Forsythe thanked
all of those in
attendance. Music
was provided by
Rumours and everyone
went on to have
a great night.
Thanks goes to
the Slieve Donard
Hotel and their
excellent staff
for ensuring a
problem free evening
was had by all.
