Down ACFL Division 3: Ardglass 1-08 Dundrum 1-13
With very little
hinging on the
outcome of this
game both Ardglass
and Dundrum fielded
experimental lineups.
However, it was
the reshuffled
pack of the away
side that won
the day as Dundrum
journeyed home
up the coast with
the two points
in the bag.
In what was a
timid 1st half
both teams managed
to rack up 0-06
apeice. Dundrum
missed a lot of
chances during
this period but
they stayed in
touch with the
homesters thanks
to scores from
midfielders Aaron
Doyle (0-01) and
Kieran Walsh (0-01)
aswell as creative
efforts from Cormac
Venney (0-01),
Chris Hogg (0-01),
Mark Fitzsimons
(0-01) and Martin
Coughlan (0-01).
Despite the first
thirty minutes
being played at
a leisurely pace,
the 2nd half turned
out to be a stormy
affair. Three
players saw red
with Ardglass
ending the game
with thirteen
men and Dundrum
finishing with
fourteen.
Inbetween the
heated exchanges
some good football
was played at
times. The Duns
started brightly
with Conor McShane
and Mark Fitzsimons
pointing. Chris
Taggart replied
for the Ardtole
outfit before
their challlengers
extended their
lead to four points
after a superb
double from Richard
Fitzsimons and
an excellent solo
effort from John
Hurley.
Midway through
the half Kieran
Walsh increased
his team's lead
to five before
Ardglass had their
first player dismissed.
For a period this
spurred on the
hosts as Michael
Magee goaled but
Dundrum's John
McKibben soon
returned the favour
with an angled
drive.
With tempers flaring
all over the pitch
Ardglass saw a
second player
ordered off before
the Duns' Neil
John McLaughlin
walked aswell.
Yet the away side
used their one
man advantage
well as Chris
Hogg goaled to
effectively kill
the game off.
Ardglass did manage
a last hurrah
but the Duns held
their nerve to
hold on for a
deserved victory.
In what was a
good workout for
John McShane's
side, Neil John
McLaughlin, Neil
McComiskey, Chris
Hogg, Richard
Fitzsimons and
Mark Fitzsimons
all impressed.
For Ardglass it
was Eamon McEvoy,
Mark Feenan, Ciaran
Dorrian and Stephen
Smyth who showed
up best.
This was Dundrum's
last game before
they enter the
promotion playoffs.
All players came
through unscathed
and in the process
some fringe players
got a chance to
stake their claim
for a starting
berth. With Ardglass
languishing in
lower mid table
this game meant
little to them.
They will have
to re-focus their
efforts if they
are to push on
in 2008.
