When a team
has an inside
forward duo
that can rack
up 1-09 between
them then you
know they are
on to a winner.
In Ross McGarry
and Gary Boyle,
Warrenpoint
had just that.
The pacey McGarry
and the robust
Boyle terrorised
Dundrum for
the duration
of the game.
The former landed
1-04 while the
latter bagged
0-05.
Dundrum's problems
didnt stop with
the Point's
terrible twins.
An inability
to win break
ball and a reluctance
to shoot in
the forward
line meant that
the East Down
strugglers were
always going
to be up against
it.
Warrenpoint
were confident
from the off
and they took
an early three
point lead.
John Boyle and
his namesake
Gary were among
the scorers.
To Dundrum's
credit they
came back to
lead by one
which really
came against
the early patterns
of play. Kieran
Walsh pointed
a free before
Colm King bundled
a John McKibben
pass in to the
Point net.
That was to
be it in terms
of Dundrum scores
for the 1st
half as Warrenpoint
took control
of the game.
1-05 came their
way without
reply. Rory
Cowan poked
in a goal after
some great work
by Ryan Mallon
and further
scores from
the goalscorer
himself, a 45',
McGarry and
the Boyle brothers
established
a seven point
lead for the
hosts at the
break.
Warrenpoint
virtually sealed
their victory
with a storming
ten minutes
after the interval.
McGarry and
John Boyle hit
early scores
before the magnificent
McGarry bypassed
Eamon King in
the Dundrum
goal to net.
With twelve
points the difference,
the Duns tinkered
their setup.
Paul Rooney
pointed a free
and Kieran Walsh
led by example
with a great
effort from
play.
However, the
Point had the
experience to
respond positively.
Two further
scores from
the man mountain
Gary Boyle and
another amazing
effort from
McGarry once
agained showed
the Blue's superiority.
Dundrum were
in desperate
need for a goal
at this stage
but a John Hurley
point was all
they could muster.
By this stage
the game started
to even up slightly.
Walsh twice
exchanged scores
with McGarry
and Gary Boyle
before former
Point man Shea
Curran responded
to a Ronan McMahon
prompting.
With only five
minutes remaining
both teams emptied
their subs bench.
The Point lost
their focus
and two late
Paul Rooney
frees left ten
points in it
at the final
whistle.
With two thirds
of the season
gone Warrenpoint
are harbouring
serious ambitions
of a playoff
place. Stout
defending from
David O'Connor
and Brendan
Kearney built
a solid foundation
from which Gabriel
Smith, John
Boyle and Ryan
Mallon excelled
from. McGarry
and Gary Boyle
were unreal
as a two man
full forward
line and received
some fine support
from Rory Cowan.
Dundrum need
lady luck to
shine down on
them if they
are to survive.
Nevertheless
the team kept
plugging away
to the final
whistle. Eamon
King can be
pleased with
his performance
in goals while
Johnny McMullan
had a good game
at wingback.
