Dundrum opened
their league
campaign with
a defeat away
to Ballymartin
last Friday
night, 1-15
to 1-8.
Dundrum's first
two games had
been postponed
and the fact
that Ballymartin
had two games,
and two wins,
under their
belt ahead of
Friday showed,
especially in
the second half.
The teams were
level on four
separate occasions
in the first
18 minutes.
All four of
Dundrum's opening
scores came
from the boot
of full-forward
Paul McComiskey,
the Sigerson,
U-21 and county
senior training
he has been
doing through
the winter evidencing
itself in his
sharpness and
effectiveness.
The fourth point
was symptomatic
of his effective
and efficient
style, good
work outfield
from John Hurley
and Shea Curran
feeding the
ball in with
Paul winning
the ball, making
room and firing
over.
However Ballymartin's
experience at
the higher level
showed on a
number of occasions,
including when
the game was
tied at four
points apiece
as they tagged
on three points
in quick succession
to move three
ahead just four
minutes before
the break.
To their credit
Dundrum showed
the battling
qualities that
have stood them
in good stead
over the past
few seasons,
centre-half
forward Kieran
Walsh and McComiskey
adding two points
to reduce the
deficit to just
a point at half
time.
However Ballymartin's
focus and ability
came to the
fore again in
the third quarter
as they hit
six points in
10 minutes to
effectively
end the game
as a contest.
By the 24th
minute of the
half all Dundrum
had to show
in the second
half was a free
from Walsh with
Ballymartin
ahead by 15
points to 7.
Once more at
this point Dundrum's
fight emerged.
First they notched
a point though
Declan Kavanagh
after good work
from substitute
Conall McKee.
Then with just
two minute sleft
on the clock,
a superb save
from the home
keeper eventually
saw the ball
played back
across the face
of the goal
for Curran to
plam home and
bring Dundrum
to four points
again.
However Ballymartin
raced down the
field from the
thrown in and
banged home
a goal of their
own to leave
the final score
1-15 to 1-8.
Credit to ballymartin
who deserved
the win for
their tenacity,
fast flowing
and cohesive
teamwork.
For Dundrum
an illustration
of the step-up
in class in
Division Two
and a lesson
in how possession
needs to transferred
into scores
with more members
of the team
needing to get
their names
on the scoresheet.
