ACFL Div 2: Attical 1-07 Glasdrumman 0-12 23/05/2003

By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.

Glasdrumman came away from Attical on Monday night with two points from their second Mourne derby of the season. Attical started the stronger with Paddy and Louis Sloan on top at midfield in the early stages. However it was Glasdrumman who scored first with a point from Raymond Magorrian after two minutes. Attical's response was swift and they went four points up in the next five minutes with points from Johnny Morgan, Martin Trainor, Paddy Sloan, Gary Morgan and Miceal Sloan. Attical maintained the pressure on Glasdrumman and missed a goal chance when the ball rebounded off the crossbar. Glasdrumman clawed their way back into the game and were rewarded with a point from Martin O'Neill after fifteen minutes but three minutes later Martin Trainor restored the Attical lead with a well taken point. Glasdrumman started to pick up broken ball around midfield and finished the half the stronger with two points from frees by Raymond Magorrian to leave the halftime score Attical 0-6 Glasdrumman 0-5.

The Glasdrumman midfield pairing of Pat Mallon and Cormac Murphy started to get the upper hand at the start of the second half and this secured a steady supply of ball to the forwards who made good use of it. Cormac Murphy, after some early misses from kickable positions, started to find his usual accuracy and opened the scoring in the second half with a point from a forty five. This was followed by points from Paul McDowell, Cormac Murphy and Shane Feeney to leave Glasdrumman with a three point lead but one minute later Johnny Morgan found the Glasdrumman net despite the best efforts of Ronan McDowell to leave the match all square with twenty minutes to go. This gave Attical a much needed boost and the next ten minutes remained scoreless as both side battled to get their heads in front. Glasdrumman made the breakthrough with another point from a forty five from Cormac Murphy but Martin Trainor knocked the ball over the bar for his third point of the game to level the scores again. However Glasdrumman were not to be denied . They battled hard and were rewarded with two points from frees from the boot of Cormac Murphy and despite relentless Attical pressure every man on the team worked hard to hold to their lead to gain two very valuable league points. Final score Attical 1-7 Glasdrumman 0-12.
