Glasdrumman
gain valuable points against Ballyholland - 20/06/03
ACFL
Div 2: Glasdrumman 1-16 Ballyholland 3-04 16/06/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Ballyholland were
the visitors to the Quarter Road on Thursday night to play a Glasdrumman team
full of confidence following their victory over Carryduff the previous week. Ballyholland
started the stronger and Ronan Murphy got their first point after two minutes.
Raymond Magorrian leveled the score with a point from a free in the sixth minute
and Ronan Murphy replied almost immediately with a well taken point from play.
Then midfielder Mick Mooney levelled the game again with a lovely point from play.
Ballyholland were next to score through John Barry but Glasdrumman replied with
another Raymond Magorrian point. Then in the twenty second minute Ballyholland
broke through the Glasdrumman defence to hammer the ball to the net from the boot
of Mark O'Hare. This score stung Glasdrumman into action and they replied with
points from Shane Feeney and Michael McGuiness. John Barry scored a point from
a free for Ballyholland but Glasdrumman finished the half the stronger and it
was left to Raymond Magorrian to score the last point from a free for Glasdrumman
to leave the half time score Glasdrumman 0-6 Ballyholland 1-4.
Glasdrumman
started the second half where they left off in the first. The midfield pairing
of Pat Mallon and Mick Mooney started to control that sector and the forwards
began to get a steady supply of the ball which they converted to scores with points
from Mick Mooney, Michael McGuiness and two from Raymond Magorrian. It was the
ninth minute before Ballyholland got their first score of the second half. Their
move started when the ball was lost in the Glasdrumman full forward line when
a score seemed the easiest option. Three passes later and the ball was in the
back of the Glasdrumman net from the boot of Eugene Campbell. Rather than knock
Glasdrumman out of their stride it seemed to have the opposite effect. They started
to pick up all the loose ball in midfield and in the next five minutes the forwards
ran rampant with points from Declan Grant, Raymond Clarke, Mick Mooney, Raymond
Magorrian and a second from Raymond Clarke. Glasdrumman were now playing with
the confidence of a team that knew that the league points were secure and in the
twenty eighth minute Shane Feeney scored a long range goal following good work
by full forward Declan Grant and it was left to Declan to score the last Glasdrumman
point three minutes later. In injury time the referee awarded a penalty to Ballyholland
which Mark O'Hare confidently hit to the net to make the final score Glasdrumman
1-16 Ballyholland 3-04
Overall this was an excellent all round performance
from a Glasdrumman side which played with style and self belief. The defence played
very well despite the enforced positional and personnel changes brought about
by the absence of Vince Smith and Cormac Murphy and their tackling, covering and
work rate was excellent with Colm Carr in particular catching the eye. Pat Mallon
and Mick Mooney played very well at midfield and the forwards showed confidence
and style and their scoring of 1-12 from play was impressive to say the least
with Raymond Magorrian, Michael McGuiness and Raymond Clarke have excellent games.
