Glasdrumman draw with Ballymartin in Mourne derby - 20/07/03
ACFL
Div 2: Glasdrumman 0-11 Ballymartin 0-11
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Ballymartin were
the visitors to the Quarter Road on Friday night hoping to get a second victory
over Glasdrumman following their one point victory earlier in the season in Ballymartin
but they met a determined Glasdrumman side still on a high following their draw
in Saval earlier in the week. Ballymartin were first off the mark with a point
in the first minute from a free by Adrian McLoughlin but Glasdrumman responded
in the fifth minute with a point from a free by Cormac Murphy.
Conal
O'Hare and Cormac Murphy exchanged points in a five minute spell but the Ballymartin
midfield started to get the upper hand and they were rewarded with two points
from Adrian McLoughlin and a point from Charlie O'Hare to open a three point lead
over Glasdrumman. Francis O'Neill knocked over a well taken point in the twenty
second minute followed by a point from a free by Cormac Murphy five minutes later
but Ballymartin restored their three point advantage with scores from Eamonn McEvoy
and Darren O'Hanlon to leave the halftime score Glasdrumman 0-4 Ballymartin 0-7.
Paul Higgins opened the scoring in the second half with a point in the second
minute followed four minutes later by a similar score from the boot of Adrian
McLoughlin to give Ballymartin a five point lead. In the fourteenth minute Raymond
Clarke pulled a point back for Glasdrumman followed a minute later by a point
from Mick Mooney but Ballymartin responded with points from Shay Rodgers and Adrian
McLoughlin to restore their five point advantage. With fifteen minutes remaining
Glasdrumman realised that they needed a huge effort to get a result from the game
and that was exactly what they produced. Cormac Murphy pointed in the sixteenth
minute followed by a similar score from Raymond Clark one minute later.
Cormac
Murphy cut the deficit further with another point from a free. Glasdrumman were
now totally in control and Paul McDowell scored two minutes later to leave just
one point between the teams. In the twenty seventh minute Raymond Clarke scored
the equalising point and the scene was set for a tense last few minutes as Glasdrumman
pushed forward looking for the two league points. With time nearly up they were
awarded a free but the ball crept agonisingly to the left of the posts and wide
to leave the final score Glasdrumman 0-11 Ballymartin 0-11
