Div 2 : Glasdrumman 2-16 Mitchels 1-08
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Glasdrumman secure
two more points. Mitchels made the journey from Newry to the Quarter Road on Sunday
to face a determined Glasdrumman side still in need of a few points to make their
Division 2 status secure for next season. Glasdrumman started like they really
meant business when Raymond Clarke fired over the first point after thirty seconds
quickly followed by points from Michael McGuiness and Cormac Murphy. Paul McDowell
pointed from a free in the seventh minute but two minutes later a mistake in the
Glasdrumman defence gifted a goal to Mitchels. Straight from the kick out the
ball was played from midfield to Raymond Clarke. He passed to the unmarked Gary
McGreevy who promptly hit the back of the Mitchel's net . Mitchels responded with
a point from Shane Cooney but within four minutes the ball was again in the back
of the Mitchels net, this time from the boot of Michael McGuiness following some
excellent forward play. Glasdrumman dominated the last five minutes with points
from midfielder Pat Mallon and two from Michael McGuiness to leave the halftime
score Glasdrumman 2-07 Mitchels 1-01.
Glasdrumman started the second half
as they had finished off the first with four points in four minutes. Gary McGreevy
got the first score after two minutes quickly followed by a point from a free
by Paul McDowell. Raymond Clarke was next to score with Cormac Murphy getting
the fourth from a long range free. Mitchels started to win the breaking ball around
midfield and clawed their way back into the game with two points from frees from
the boot of Stephen Poucher and a point each from E Pollock and Stephen Kearney.
In the twentieth minute Michael McGuiness scored for Glasdrumman but Mitchels
fought back well being rewarded with a point in the twenty fifth minute from full
forward Kevin Kearney followed by points from Stephen Kearney and a long range
effort from Kieran McLogan which bounced over the Glasdrumman bar. Glasdrumman,
conscious of the importance of score difference, turned the screw with points
from Raymond Clarke, Michael McGuiness, substitute Shane Feeney and Cormac Murphy
to leave the final score Glasdrumman 2-16 Mitchels 1-08.
Overall this
was a good solid performance with Glasdrumman showing some of the style and determination
which had produced some excellent results for them earlier in the season. In defence
Francis O'Neill, Cormac Murphy, Brian Burns and Shaun Brennan, having probably
his best game of the season, caught the eye. Midfielders Pat Mallon and Declan
Grant ensured a plentiful supply of the ball to the forwards where Michael McGuiness
and Raymond Clarke both had excellent games ably assisted by Paul McDowell Gary
McGreevy, Raymond Magorrian and Robbie McGivern.
