Div 2: Mitchels 0-11 Glasdrumman 1-13 13/06/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Glasdrumman made
the journey to Newry to play Mitchels on Friday night hoping to make it three
wins in a row having gained full points from their last two league encounters
against Attical and Shamrocks respectively. The travelling fans went home happy
as Glasdrumman gained another two league points to leave them just outside the
top four as the first round matches in division two come to an end. Glasdrumman
started with their customary sense of urgency and Raymond Clarke has his name
on the score sheet with a point in the first minute. Mitchels responded almost
immediately with a point from Stephen Quinn. In the seventh minute Michael McGuiness
slotted the ball over the bar followed almost immediately by a point from the
boot of Raymond Magorrian. Four minutes later full forward Paul McDowell broke
through and cleverly slotted the ball to the Mitchel's net to further increase
the Glasdrumman lead. Cormac Murphy added another point from a free two minutes
later followed by a similar score from play by Raymond Clarke to increase the
Glasdrumman lead to seven points. Stephen Quinn pulled a point back from a free
for Mitchels but Cormac Murphy restored the Glasdrumman lead with a point from
a free two minutes later. Stephen Quinn increased his personal tally when he scored
two points from frees but it was left to Paul McDowell to score the last point
of the half to leave the half time score Mitchels 0-4 Glasdrumman 1-7.
Mitchels started the second half with much more purpose and within four minutes
had reduced the Glasdrumman lead to three points with a point from Kevin Kearney
and two from by their best player on the night Stephen Quinn. Raymond Magorrian
pulled a point back from a free two minutes later but Mitchels continued their
good run with another point from Stephen Quinn and a point from Joe Price. With
just two points between the teams at this stage Glasdrumman seemed to find another
gear and in the next ten minutes they scored five points from play with scores
from Paul McDowell, Michael McGuiness, Raymond Clarke, Michael McGuiness again
and Raymond Magorrian. At this stage Glasdrumman knew that they had done enough
to secure the points and they seemed to relax and allowed Mitchels back into the
game and they were rewarded with two points from their top scorer Stephen Quinn
again to leave the final score Mitchels 0-11 Glasdrumman 1-13.
