Glasdrumman share the spoils at Saval - 20/07/03
ACFL
Div 2: Saval 0-15 Glasdrumman 1-12 20/07/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Glasdrumman put up
a never say die battling performance at Nan Sands Park on Monday night to gain
an excellent away point against promotion contenders Saval despite the absence
of several key players due to holiday commitments and injuries. Darren Quinn opened
the scoring with a point for Saval in the first minute but Raymond Clarke levelled
the score a minute later with a point from a free. Saval started to assert themselves
on the game and in a ten minute spell went into a three point lead with points
from Kevin Faloon, Fergal McConville and Darren Cunningham. In the fifteenth minute
Raymond Clarke cut the deficit with his second point from a free. Three minutes
later Johnny Hughes hit a forty five over the bar to restore the Saval lead but
Raymond Clarke hit back immediately with a well taken point from play. Straight
from the kickout Collie Turley restored the Saval lead with a point and this was
further extended when Darren Quinn hit his second point of the half. The last
ten minutes belonged to Glasdrumman as they battled their way back into the game
with points from Cormac Murphy, Raymond Clarke and centre half back Brian Burns
to leave the halftime score Saval 0-7 Glasdrumman 0-6.
Darren Quinn opened
the scoring, as he had done in the first half, with a point in the fifth minute
followed by a similar score from a forty five for Glasdrumman from the boot of
Cormac Murphy. Peter Turley restored the Saval lead three minutes later with a
point but Glasdrumman hit back with a point from substitute Raymond Magorrian
with almost his first touch of the ball. In a six minute spell Saval further extended
their lead with three points from Peter Turley, Gavin Quinn and Fergal McConville.
Glasdrumman showed their battling qualities as they dug deep to get themselves
back into the game and they were rewarded with points from midfielders Cormac
Murphy and Pat Mallon. Two minutes later Saval broke through the Glasdrumman defence
for what looked like a certain goal only to be foiled by a brilliant point blank
save from goalkeeper Paul Brennan. As if inspired by this, Glasdrumman fought
their way back into the game and although Darren Cunningham pointed from a free
for Saval, they were rewarded with points from Cormac Murphy and Mick Mooney to
leave just one point between the teams. Peter Turley increased the Saval lead
to two points with a well taken long range score and with time nearly up Glasdrumman
pushed forward and were rewarded when Mick Mooney hit the back of the Saval net
to put Glasdrumman ahead for the first time in the game. With defeat staring them
in the face Saval pushed forward looking for a score and in the fourth minute
of injury time were rewarded with a well taken point from a free by Fergal McConville
to leave the final score Saval 0-15 Glasdrumman 1-12.
