Div 2: Glasdrumman 0-12 Newry Shamrocks 0-10 06/06/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Newry Shamrocks
made the journey to the Quarter Road on Friday night to play a very confident
and determined Glasdrumman team following their recent wins over Ballyholland
and Attical. Shamrocks started the stronger with a point from Tony Crean after
two minutes . This seemed to spur Glasdrumman into life and they responded almost
immediately with a point from Cormac Murphy. The pairing of Pat Mallon and Cormac
Murphy started to gain supremacy at midfield and with a good supply of the ball
the Glasdrumman forwards ran riot for the rest of the first half with three points
from Raymond Clarke, and one each from Pat Mallon, Paul McDowell and Cormac Murphy.
Cathal Murphy responded for Shamrocks with a point and following another Shamrock's
attack Ronan McDowell was forced to make an excellent save to leave the halftime
score Glasdrumman 0-8 Shamrocks 0-2.
Following their halftime talk Shamrocks
started the second half like they meant business and they reduced the Glasdrumman
lead to three points with two points from Colin Burns and a point from Martin
Rafferty. Cormac Murphy steadied the Glasdrumman ship with a well taken point
from play and this seemed to stem the Shamrocks onslaught. Five minutes later
Shamrocks cut the Glasdrumman lead further with another point but Cormac Murphy
responded with two excellent points from frees to leave five points between the
sides . Shamrocks hit back almost immediately with a point but Cormac Murphy's
free taking seemed to inspire the Glasdrumman players and for the next ten minutes
they contained the Shamrocks forwards. Shamrocks eventually started to assert
themselves on the game with a point from Colin Burns and two from Martin Rafferty
to reduce the Glasdrumman lead to a single point. With time running out up stepped
Cormac Murphy to score another excellent point from a free to secure the two league
points for Glasdrumman with a final score Glasdrumman 0-12 Shamrocks 0-10.
