ACFL
Div 2: Glasdrumman 0-09 Warrenpoint 0-09 29/08/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Glasdrumman got
back to league action on Friday night, after last week's two championship games
against Tullylish, when they met Division 2 league leaders Warrenpoint at the
Quarter Road. For Glasdrumman, still requiring a few points to make their Division
2 status secure, this was a very important game and a chance to avenge a seven
point defeat by Warrenpoint earlier in the season at Moygannon. Glasdrumman started
the more lively and Paul McDowell put them ahead in the fifth minute with a point
but Warrenpoint were level three minutes later with a point from Bernie Ruane.
In the twelfth minute Paul McDowell eased Glasdrumman ahead again with
a well taken point but Conor McGarry levelled the game again with a point. In
the twenty third minute the referee awarded a penalty to Glasdrumman. Up stepped
Raymond Magorrian to hot the ball to Kieth Watters right hand side but the Warrenpoint
keeper did well to get his hand to the ball and touch it over the bar to put Glasdrumman
back in front. Straight from the kick out the ball ended up with Gabriel Smith
who hit a lovely point to leave the game all square for the third time but it
was left to Raymond Magorrian to score the last point of the half to leave the
halftime score Glasdrumman 0-4 Warrenpoint 0-3.
Straight from the throw
in Declan Grant caught the ball and pushed forward before hitting a well taken
point to leave two points between the sides. In the fifth minute Warrenpoint pulled
a point back but this was quickly answered by a point for Raymond Clark. Four
minutes later Warrenpoint again scored a point but Raymond Clark's accuracy from
a free kick again left two points between the teams. In a five minute spell Warrenpoint
went a head for the first time in the match with points from Kevin Franklin, Declan
McElhern and Eddie O'Hare but Glasdrumman were not going to give up without a
fight and they restored their lead with a point from Paul McDowell in the twenty
third minute and an excellent score two minutes later from a difficult angle by
Robbie McGivern.
Warrenpoint fought back strongly and were rewarded with
a point from Shay Curran in the last minute to leave the final score Glasdrumman
0-9 Warrenpoint 0-9.
Overall this was a good all round performance from
a Glasdrumman side which played with guts and determination. The defence played
very well despite the enforced positional and personnel changes brought about
by the absence of Vince Smith, Mark Trimble and Cormac Murphy and their tackling,
covering and work rate was excellent. Pat Mallon and Declan Grant were very effective
at midfield and the forwards, despite the absence of Mick Mooney and Shane Feeney,
worked hard and took their chances well when they came.
