Glasdrumman just too strong for Carryduff

Intermediate Championship

Glasdrumman 1-08  Carryduff 1-07

Glasdrumman started their 2005 Intermediate championship with a victory over Carryduff at Loughinisland after a hard fought game which went the whole way to the wire. Carryduff were first off the mark with a second minute point from Eamonn Blaney but points in the third and fifth minute from Pat Mallon and Cormac Murphy respectively eased Glasdrumman into the lead , The lead, however, was short lived as Chris O’Neill popped over a seventh minute point to leave the match all square. Glasdrumman started to assert their superiority and they were rewarded with a thirteenth minute fisted point from Sean McDowell, quickly followed by a second point from Cormac Murphy a minute later. Wing half back Colum Carr increased the lead to three points in the sixteenth minute as Glasdrumman settled into their rhythm. Shane O’Neill cut the Glasdrumman lead with a point a minute later and this was further reduced four minutes later when Ronan Lawlor scored his first point of the game. Then in the twenty seventh minute a loose ball in the Carryduff goal mouth was played back by corner forward Shaun Brennan into the path of  the inrushing Sean McDowell and he made no mistake hitting the back of the net despite the best efforts of Carryduff goalkeeper Declan Alder. Ryan O’Neill pulled a point back in the thirtieth minute to leave the half time score Glasdrumman 1-5 Carryduff 0-5.

After a slow start to the second half by both teams Raymond Magorrian further increased the Glasdrumman lead with a point after fourteen minutes. It was another seven minutes before Carryduff opened their second half account when Eamonn Blaney pointed. Midfielder Declan Grant opened his account with a point in the twenty fourth minute and this was followed three minutes later by a Cormac Murphy point from a fifty. As time ran out  Glasdrumman looked confident with a five point lead but Carryduff had other ideas. Rory Gardiner got the ball in the thirtieth minute following a bad Glasdrumman clearance and he hit the back of the Glasdrumman net to leave just two points between the teams. A Carryduff point a minute later and the game  looked  poised  for a draw but stout defending by the Glasdrumman defence just held out the Carryduff forwards and there was a great sense of  relief among the Glasdrumman players as the referee blew the final whistle to give them victory by the narrowest of margins.

Overall Glasdrumman were the better side and they played some nice football throughout. The defence was solid and coped well with the Carryduff forwards but the game hinged on the performance of midfield where Pat Mallon had an outstanding game especially in the first half. He was ably assisted by Declan Grant who broke a lot of ball which Glasdrumman won. The forwards got a good supply of the ball and, although they sometimes played one extra pass than was required instead of taking their scores, they always looked the more dangerous For some of the younger players this was their first championship victory and by the look on their faces at the end of the game you could see that it meant a lot to them.
